I'll open this post with this, I have not had a chance to fish because of work, GIRLFRIEND, and this weather. I'm hoping to squeeze some in this weekend as the girlfriend has booked a trip in S.P.I.. I would like to know if there are any easily accessable places to wade fish behind the barrier island? Other than that, has anyone had the same troubles I've had getting out on the water? |

Down by the convention center but there are usually a lot of windsurfers in that area too. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Behind the convention center is one spot, if you go there you'll have to wade away from the windsurfers like tyler said. You can also go past the convention center if you have a truck there is a dirt road a little ways down that you can turn onto and get out to the sand flat. You'll have to wade a good ways out to get to the pot holes there but it's good fishing. You'll pass I believe three dirt roads that are blocked off before you get to the dirt road you can drive on. Also you can rent a yak from the kayak shop down there and yak across to the flats. The jetty was hot when I was down there a couple weekends ago so you may try that out. Get live mullet and just throw it out under a popping cork. If you're brave get down as close to the end as you can there are rocks that kinda make a circle out from the jetties under the water on the surf side. We were catching the spanish there. Also saw jacks and kings. Pack light if you head out there it's really slick right now! _________________ If there is a picture of a fish above I'm a happy man |

Oh ya also those rocks I was talking about make a pocket right next to the jetty. It's full of mangroves and some little groupers. Drop little pieces of shrimp or fish down there for them. That can keep the girls entertained if they're tagging along _________________ If there is a picture of a fish above I'm a happy man |

I usually go there in June and October. This June, I will be there from the 8th for a week.
Finger mullet right next to the rocks will sometimes get you some big Mangroves. 2 or 3 pounders.
Early morning on the surf side, a horse mullet in the surf may get you a big Jack Crevalle.
Early morning at the end of the jetty will get you Kings. It is a long hike.
Live shrimp cast out with a split shot about 12" from the hook and retrieved slowly, used to get you trout. Now, though, the mangroves may take it too quick.
Go to beach access road 5 up north and you should be able to drive up the beach in 2wd for a ways as they maintain the beach. You can catch Whiting and Pompano on shrimp or shrimp/fishbites combo. Half ounce jigging spoons kill the SkipJacks when they are around. Then, use skipjacks or or whiting as cut bait and you never know what will come out. Reds, small sharks, or Jack Crevalle.
If you get you a Critter Getter, you can suck up ghost shrimp at low tide, and everything eats them. I believe Quick Stop or Quick Way on the right hand side as you are coming into Port Isabel should have them. They also have other baits you may need.
I usually catch my own bait with a castnet. Mullet - Can't beat giving them what they are used to eating.
Good luck.... _________________

If ur gonna wade, I've done pretty good on trout just north of Pier 19, b/w there and the causeway. Just wade out to the drop off with plastics. It's right across from Schliterbahn, turn right just before the KOA entrance and just drive up to the water, no long walks or bad roads. You can wade from there all the way to the causeway and back till you find em. I've always caught fish there and there are never any windsurfers, sometimes a kayak angler or two. This is what I do down there while my wife shops! Heartburn _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |

I plan on going to and was wondering how the jetty rocks are placed. Is there a good flat walking surface like on the Port Aransas north jetty or is there a lot of gaps in between them? Will also be taking my kayak so I imagine anywhere behind the island is probably good? _________________ All fisherman are liars except you and me, and I'm not so sure about you... |

The jetty starts off with a nice walkway then goes to the scattered rocks then back to a nice walkway again. And ya pretty much all of the flats behind the island are good. Also if you have a yak and the wind is going to be calm you can fish san martin lake which is between port isabel and brownsville. But the wind has to be calm like i said. _________________ If there is a picture of a fish above I'm a happy man |

Thanks, I'll probably be going to the end of the jetty and hopefully catch a king or two. Nice to know that the jetty is walking friendly. How long of a stretch is the scattered rocks of the jetty? _________________ All fisherman are liars except you and me, and I'm not so sure about you... |

It has been a while since I ventured very far out so I cannot answer the "how long is the stretch of stattered rocks"
But,,,,,,,
From where you park your car, to the surf line, it is either walk on the sand or trek (sp) across scattered rocks.
Best bet is to travel light.
Put your rods together and tie with a strap that will go over your shoulder (the rods against your back). This frees your hands to carry something in each.
A wet burlap bag makes for a very nice fish holder. The evaporative process keeps the fish cool and moist.
By the way, I believe at the Quick Stop in Port Isabel, they will sell you live shrimp packed in sawdust. Don't know how or why, but they stay alive. Less weight to carry than a bucket with aerator and water. _________________

Awesome, Thanks for the info. I've actually tried saw dust shrimp before and it works well. _________________ All fisherman are liars except you and me, and I'm not so sure about you... |

It's a good little stretch of scattered rocks but it's worth going through it to get past all the people. The beginning of the jetty is covered elbow to elbow. Good luck though! Let us know how you do! _________________ If there is a picture of a fish above I'm a happy man |
