"damage was minor". If they would have been going fast, people wouldn't be walking away from this deal.
go run into the dock at 10 MPH next time you're at the ramp and see what happens to the people in your boat. |
OK!
Now slow them down some more and check the results!
I get it my friend.
Fog limits visiblity, if you can't see the bow of your boat, you should slow down or find a place to wait it out.
I once launched at bluff landing in my yak, it was foggy, I found myself in extreme danger from power boats running on plane in zero visibility. I was not with these guys over the weekend so I cannot speak to thier specifics but I have seen some pretty stupid people at the helm.
And like LLBB said, take responsibility for your actions, don't blame it on the FOG. (or the gun) People are in control, not things... |
do you have lights on your kayak?
there was a guy anchored in the ICW around the pink cabin and he had some incredible LED lights, he was flashing them as boats came by.
I have seen MANY kayaks with absolutely no lighting at all. These days if I'm wading anywhere a boat might be, I wear a headlamp. |
Yes, my yak did have a light, I don't have it anymore.
It's not really relevant to the discussion (IMO) as the circumstance in question were boats, my example of being in my Yak is only to say how scary it can be when power boats run on plane in the fog. I am tired of this discussion so I'll drop off, feel free to have the last word. I'll just say this in closing, if someone is killed in a boating accident and it's foggy, high speed involved. There will very likely be criminal charges filed and without a doubt a civil case. There will be no winners. |

| I promise you one thing: If there was no fog, there wouldnt have been a accident! That is what I was trying to get across. If ya cant see, dont matter if your going 10mph or 100mph, its stupid to be out there in zero visibility. GPS isnt radar. But in clear weather, let them run fast in open water. |

If the tournament director/organizer makes profit, that also has to be claimed. How much more in fees and taxes do people want to be imposed? What about the positive impact of the tournaments bringing in revenue to cities like corpus, Port A, etc? |
Yes - they pay fed income tax (so do I ) but I think the state of texas, specifically TPWD, should get a cut. I guess you could say they do from fishing license, but the way tournaments use a public resource goes beyond general public use. For profit tournaments, being a commercial operation, should have to pay extra for utilizing a public resource for profit - just like fishing guides do and the same way commercial fishermen do.
And - you can always play the local Chamber of Commerce card - but what about the negative impacts on local anglers (who pay high property taxes) and non-tournamnet, visiting, anglers who also have paid for a fishing license, but get screwed out on the water by tournament guys gridding the flats. |

| Reason #3007 why I avoid tournaments like the plague. I always check before heading down to PA, I want to be as far away as possible. |

| For clarification, NO ONE makes a living at these tournaments! And yes one of the boats was totaled. |

| I was in that tournament and ran from Port A to the Laguna. The fog got bad once we passed the JFK and all the tournament boats I saw slowed down to a crawl. I was glad to see that every boat that happened upon the collision stopped and offered aid. I got there as people were climbing back into the boats. Scary scene for sure. I've heard several different stories as to how it happened but all are heresay. Glad everyone was ok. Could have been way worse. Every boat I talked to stopped short of their destinations once the fog got bad and fished just to wait it out. |

| Isn't proper procedure for any boat to sound off with whatever sound signal you have every 2 minutes? |

Interesting. I guess professional fishermen are just weekend amatures?? There called pros for a reason, their PROfession is fishing and making a living at it. Look at the BASS guys and the other saltwater guys. Alot of people make their living fishing tournaments and guiding. |

Guiding yes, tournaments no. I fished the pro redfish circuit from the beginning. Not one single team on the circuit made enough money to earn a living. Me and my partner were consistently in the top and never even came close to living off the winnings. Why do you think the Redfish Cup and FLW faded away. The circuits that are out there now pay way less than the above mentioned tours. The Bass tours are the way to go but the competition is so great that if you make the classic, you earned it. I guess that if a team won all five events in the regular season and the championship then you could live off that. But really? There were hardly any repeat winners and the ones that did win did'nt do it several times in one season. I don't know what your background is, but I commercially fished, guided and fished all the saltwater tours and can tell you from experience, it's a sucky life. I learned quick that I would rather use my head and make real money than listen to a bunch of know it alls that think that you can run to Baffin and catch a 30" trout any day of the week with the right guide. Trust me, ask any guide and see what they say about people that call and want to go to Baffin for a 30" fish. I guarantee eveyone one of them will start laughing! |

| I forgot to add that most of the tour pros are not guides. In the beginning yes. But most realized that these tournaments took money out of their pockets. Ask any of the guys on tour and they will tell you it ain't for the money. We all fished it for the fun of it and for a chance at a trophy that said I was the best that day. |

| I hear ya. Fishing isnt a easy life. Im a machinist for a reason. Fishing tournaments is just a bonus. I love the baffin bay stories. I see that all the time. Big trout can be caught not only in baffin and alot people forget that. Ive in fact never fished baffin itself, only yarbrough. The two 7lb+ trout ive caught were far from baffin. |

The chamber of commerce is there to help the businesses in these towns. They act in favor of these businesses. If it wasn't for events such as these many of the businesses would go under. That is why the chamber of commerce supports events like this. As much as people talk about the things they "hate" such as spring break, tournaments, biker weekends, etc. These little island towns wouldn't exist without them. Not in their current capacity anyways. I personally enjoy all of the shops, bait stands, restaurants, and boat ramps that are on the islands. So I can't see trying to run any of that off. _________________ If there is a picture of a fish above I'm a happy man |
