I came down for a few days to visit my mother and I brought my fishing gear. I have not fished in or around Corpus in probably about 30 years. Where is a descent place to fish in or around CC and were is a good place to get bait? I am about 2 blocks off of Ocean Drive by Cole Park. As far as the bait is concerned what kind should I get? Shrimp, use lures? I used to fish a lot but being in the military and traveling i kind of got out of it so I do not know a lot about fishing anymore as far as what color the water should be and so forth.

Any help would be appreciated.

Good all around starter is dead shrimp and fishbites. Fishing at Cole Park is pretty dead year round, its always over fished. Some good places you can go that aint too far is Red Dot Pier on the other side of Flour Bluff between Flour Bluff and the island. Since the black drum are running you can also pick up hole crabs but shrimp and fishbites still will land you big drum. I would recommend staying away from the island as it is spring break. Another place you could try is Indian Point which is just over the big bridge between CC and Portland but I aint fished there in a few years so I don't know how good it is over there. For rigs I would suggest a single or double drop rig that is rated for 45lbs at the least. Its cheap and since you won't be here too long its cheaper than buying supplies to make your own leaders. Also I would recommend 2-3oz stainless spider weights due to currents. For hooks I would go with 4/0-5/0 circle hooks and the cheapest price on them is the Eagle Claw and you can get them in a box of 25 for less than $10. Hope this helps. Just quick and easy to do but will catch you some fish. For black drum, I would recommend using 1 piece of crab fishbites and 1 piece of shrimp fishbites, and you can still tip it with a piece of dead shrimp.

Any advice on a good time to go to Red Dot pier? I have been reading a lot of these forums and honestly i am embarrased to say i have no idea what fishbites are. Just pieces of cut up fish?

Fishbites are an artificial bait that's just like the real thing (Scented). Gulp! shrimp are also great, they are scented as well. All of this can be found at Academy or Roys Bait and Tackle.

Also, if you like wade fishing, you could probably catch some descent fish next to the causeway, casting into the boat channel on the northern side facing CC Bay direction. I waded out relatively recently and caught some descent trout on a shrimp lure.
