Took the kiddos and the Haynie out his weekend as it hasn't been run all winter and ended up hooking up with a bad ace 29" redfish!
Won't tell where or what was used as we all know there are only 5-10 reds left in that lake but last night I made the beast on the grill in the same manner I do with reds from the bay and OMG is the taste different!!
Can someone chime in with why the taste was so better and flakier than some of the reds from the gulf!?!?!? Zero worms and the typical red bloodline along the middle and same look but it just tasted amazing with just lemon pepper and fresh lemon slices and butter...
I'm guessing fresh versus salt water but if you haven't had freshwater reds you have got to try it! |

Maybe it has something to do with Braunig being a cooling pond for a gas powered power plant?
Seriously, nice catch. I mostly C&R the reds and hybrids I catch from Braunig and Calaveras. The catfish are tasty, though. |

I don't know? I've been fishing that lake for years and I still like saltwater redfish better. My friends also agree with me. _________________ wishin i was fishin! |

I never have caught a redfish that had worms in it. Glad you caught a nice freshwater red. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

A lot of times, the taste of fish and game will depend on what their primary food is. I'm guessing the diet of fresh water reds versus salt water reds is very different. _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

I used to catch them at Tradinghouse Lake and to me they tasted good but not as good as the saltwater reds. It could be that fish tastes better just because you are at the coast! I think the freshwater reds had a bit fishier taste to them. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

I have always heard you better finish up having children before you eat fish from the power plant lakes ! _________________ Been fishing Baffin/Land Cut since 1968 |

Water quality is constantly monitored. Keep in mind though that in order to maintain constant levels at Calaveras/Braunig, treated effluent is used. When all is said and done, the treated effluent is nearly as "clean" as water straight from the Edwards Aquifer.
I found this today. It's amusing. http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Fishing-guide-acquitted-of-harassing-competitor-4331014.php |

I've seen that guy Manny a couple years back catch his limit of hybrid stripers at the dam, run to the boat ramp, come back and catch more. He wasn't on a charter just fishing by himself. _________________ Shallow Sportn' it |

My PB at braunig is 36" at 15 3/4lbs. Fun as hell on light tackle. I got my own spots on that lake and only me and 3 other ppl knows them, times and bait. W/ out a boat anymore we take the yaks and its fun.
As for eating, i'll take a salty red on the half-shell. _________________ B.O.H.I.C.A. buddy |
