My 13 year old ready for an upgrade on yak. The one pictured served its purpose, but now he hates it. Old school wilderness beat. I am looking at Pelican 100 apex at academy.
We typically drive to back of Island from Bird Island to Shamrock and launch the yaks. I will make a rod holder from milk crate for him too. We are experinced yaking fishermen. We dont yak when its blowing a gale..

Anybody have any experience with the Academy Pelican Apex? Pros/cons He has 250 saved and we want to slam this weekend.

Thanks,

Freak

I had a bad experience with those kayaks. They are made of two pieces ( top and bottom) and if not welded right they will leak water into the hull. I bought the apex 100 for my first kayak and it leaked like crazy. They also have horrible tracking even without the wind blowing you around. Academy has a no return policy on kayaks but i demanded them to do so anyway. I would recomend you search craigslist for a used Ocean kayak or something better than a pelican. Just my 2 cents.

He can find a scrambler or speck for that price on Craigslist with enough looking and a little luck. IMO it would be worth it for him to wait and purchase a little better made kayak to save some frustration with the Pelicans.

I'd also stay away from a used Wilderness Systems kayak. Warranty does NOT transfer over.

+1 on not getting a pelican.

Try to stay with a single mold style yak, academy also carries the Heritage Angler for a decent price

Can't patch the kind of plastic they use on the Pelicans.
