I'm a newbie surf fisher and ever since I've been surf fishing I've been using nothing but braid on my spinning reel. I'm tired of getting my finger tore up so I'm switching to mono. My question is what brand and what line rating of mono should I use to throw roughly 2-6 oz? I am using a 10'6" Med Hvy/fast action spinning rod [line rating is 15-40#, weight rating is 2-8oz] with a shimano baitrunner 8000 reel [Reel specs: http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/products/reels/saltwater_spinning/Biatrunner.html ]. My main concern is not snapping the line when loading the rod hard. Thanks in advance. _________________ I like turtles... |

I'd say 20 lb mono would suffice. _________________ -L |

| I was also tired of getting my finger cut up using braid on my big surf poles. instead of going back to mono I got stripping guards used for fly fishing. Works great for a couple of bucks. I think Roy's carries them. |

So I did some thinking and came up with the idea of putting around 7 yards of 20# mono leader and connecting it to the existing braid on my reel via uni to uni knot. This should eliminate contact with braid while casting, add a bit of shock absorption & at the same time keep my braid line capacity. I'm pretty sure someone came up with this before but what do you all think? _________________ I like turtles... |

General rule of thumb... 10lbs of mono for every oz. of weight for your shock leader to prevent the line breaking when you cast. 20lb mono to cast 2oz weight 40lb to cast 4oz and so on. You can usually get away with more weight than that but that is the general rule. And from my experience you can really cast about all the weight you want with 40 or 50 lb mono but 20 to 30 lb breaks easily when chunking lots weight. Hope this helps and good luck. _________________ Jake |

If you are throwing up to 6oz hard you are going to need a shock leader or an endless supply of terminal tackle for when your line breaks. This is good info:

I was using Big Game then Ande, then back to Big Game and now I am using 20lb Sufix Tritanium on most of my surf rods. It seems a lot better than the last batch of Big Game I had that seemed to turn brittle after several trips. I am not sure if the Big Game line changed or maybe I got an old spool that had been sitting around for a long time. |

| 20 pound test sounds good, but if you are using a 6 ounce surf sinker then you should also be using 20-30 feet of 60 pound shock leader tied on using the old style blob-knot(not melting the end with a lighter) or a uni-knot. |

| might also want to check out Breakaway for a "cannon" to place on your spinning rod...it's a small device that you put your line on while casting..never have to have your finger touch the line..if your power casting you will definately need a shock leader..the cannon can also be used with a shock leader |

| I just picked up a 13ft LD-X from Nick this last weekend. I walked in, didnt really know jack about real surf fishing, and walked out educated with a bunch of good gear. I just mounted a new Fin-Nor OS4500 on it and picking up a spool of 40lb braid today. If you havent been by breakway, I suggest you go by and chat with Nick. The cannon is a finger saver! |

Nick's cannon is very easy to use and it's out of the way when reeling....
I have used them on a couple of spinning outfits and they work...
no slip, no cut fingers and you can set the drag before casting.
it's the best way to get the most distance out of a spinning rig when slinging more than an ounce. _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |
