Went to the jetty yesterday afternoon. The dredge barge was in the channel east of the boat launch area, and pipes were set up all down the beach past Holiday Inn.

Thanks for the tip! Surprised Surprised Emailed the message below to the City Council and City Manager after seeing your post:

Was unaware that this was planned so soon after the last channel maintenance. Can you confirm this activity, describe where the sand will be placed, and tell me if/when the long-awaited rows of bollards approved by the voters to segregate parking, pedestrians and vehicular traffic in front of the seawall will be emplaced afterward?

I remembered when they announced dredging of Packery for fall of 2012, I immediately thought it would ruin the redfish run, flounder, spanish macks etc. during the peak fishing for the year.

I was fishing near the barge tonight and some feller on the barge started yelling something that I couldn't hear because of the motor running. I went ahead and left, wasn't catching anything there anyway. Earlier on the jetty we caught a few blues and specks along with my usual quota of hardheads.

Most of the dredging companies could care less about fishing. That has been my experience at least from Michigan. I have seen dredging in river mouths during the peak salmon run. As a result, many fish never ran the river, didn't spawn, died and washed up on beaches of Lake Michigan.

If the Packery dredging sucks up some flounder and reds, how would we ever know? Besides, if it isn't a turtle, not much concern would be shown.

Dredging during any major run of any fish is terrible. But you have to find somebody in the civic bureaucracy who cares.

If they wanted to do something worthwhile, why not patch the huge potholes in the paved road to Packery? Compared to the condition of Port A beaches, Packery jetty area is VERY neglected. But Port A encourages and welcomes tourism. Wish we did here in CC.

Councilwoman Colleen McIntyre replied that this is a continuation of the earlier dredging, not a secondary dredging. The dredger came in short of the amount of sand in the contract. The Blucher Institute surveyed and determined additional dredging was required, so the remaining dredging was ordered as you saw on the beach.

Regarding bollards, the Parks Dept. had originally planned to install them itself, but later found that a contractor would have to do the work at a much greater than expected cost. The cost issue and a desire to get a better handle on the sand movement and renourishment before putting the bollards in place are reasons for the delay in the bollard construction.

Unlike the case in Michigan where there are seasonal windows to avoid mass impacts from dredging, the Texas passes have none. Every Texas and federal agency studied the issue, only to learn there was some important migration moving in or out of the passes during every month of the year. Because the sea turtles were on the threatened and endangered lists, their nesting seasons took priority when the Corps of Engineers set the conditions for its own dredging projects and those it permitted. Complaining to the City of Corpus Christi won't change the timing because the City's dredging permit gives it no choice in the matter; try appealing to the Corps.

As to the condition of the roads, EVERYBODY complains about that, and has for over 30 years, while the City cut back on street maintenance to pursue pet projects.

Isn't that maintenance a shared responsibility also with the County?

Maybe three hundred dollars of some cold patch and gravel along with a few volunteers might improve the situation. Heck, I'd kick in some money. Maybe we can do a stealth repair ourselves.

Back where I came from, one residential side street leading to 200 homes had holes as bad or worse than Packery access. A few of us got together and filled the holes. Well, one of the homeowner's association boards got bent out of shape over the vigilante road crew messin' with their street. The net result was that they finally unlocked their treasury and hired a professional paver to do it right with hot asphalt. Cost nearly $900 by hiring a company who used leftover materials from a couple jobs.

However, there was some grumbling about additional charges to dig out the cold patchwork from the phantom crew. Cool

Net result was the street was fixed, but after a three year delay.

How bad to you think the dredging will hurt the fishing on the jetty this weekend?

I was planning on coming down to fish the jetty but i guess i can go try fish pass or another spot.

Someone mention dredging?

Saw this at the Mansfield cut, after driving 60 miles through Hurricane Ike debris.
Talk about ruining my day.
Pulled up on it and thought..WTF is THAT?
