Well yall im trying to bounce back from getting really sick on monday..
felt ok enough for a easy paddle..
Full moon was still high temps were perfect and my sickness was settled for the time being...
bay was glassy when i got there and sunrise was killer...
My poor lews finally died on me, the worm gear chipped with some baffin sand getting in there i guess...
Still running strong though just need to buy a new worm gear, lasted longer than my citica...
Started the morning off with a swimming buddy....
Identification anybody?
Couldnt find any redfish to piss off so i figured..
OK..i have my bow...i have my arrows...lets find those freaking sheepshead!...
If you remember last year i kept posting about monster sheepies and a state record is lurking in the numbers somewhere...
Poled around and found my first of the day...thought it was a big ugly but when i got closer i realized it was a sheepies in the 30"s upper 30's at that!
I dont shoot my bow much but i took a long shot *at least for me* and missed it by inches..by the time i got the arrow back i had lost it...
Finally gave up on that search and found the numbers...
see a sheepie...pole up...draw..release *thunk* a nice sheepie turns sideways and starts thrashing...
Get it to the yak and the celebration begins!!!!!!!!!
First sheepshead ever and a nice one im told!
State record for sheepshead with a bow...22" 6.10 lbs.....http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/action/staterecords.php?env=SW&age_group=all&list=2&browse=Submit
The one in the photo was 22" 6.9lbs
I passed up shots on some bigger fish mainly because im not that great a shot yet and some undersized were next to them...it made me be picky about my shots...
I went along my day picking off sheepies seeing some MONSTERS that wanted nothing to do with me..
i Finally get 3 feet from a LARGE sheepie ...draw...release..*snap* crap! didnt disengage the zebco...line snapped and i lost my arrow...
Headed home with a proud stringer of 4 large sheepies smallest being 21"
It was a Great morning! Wish i could have got them on rod and reel but i tried for a year to trick one of these and have had zero luck with it so aside form cast netting, force feeding was the next best thing....I do have another trick up my sleeve that a buddy brought to my attention ..guess we will have to wait until the next report to see if it works
Till next time

Ive tried that twice, but their heads are usually dug into the mud, ive had a pickup on a gulp crab but they nibble it to pieces before they get the hook.... _________________

| Nice report. Liked the pictures. Sheepshead are great eating but I am always disappointed in how low the yield is. |

Thanks for the report! That looks like so much fun! Lol, I'll have to try that out one day.
I've never caught a sheephead before. |

I'd say eat em whole, but I'm sure they are a pain in the butt to scale.
AT, were you shooting a compound bow or a recurve? I've got a cheap little 35 lb draw recurve that I could attach a spool to, but I'm not sure if it would do the job. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

If you can set a fiddler crab trap sheepies usually can't refuse them. _________________

Given the shape of the head and the rather large eye, I would venture it is one of the many garter snakes of the genus Thamnophis, but can't really make out any distinguishing markings for a species.
But then, this is only a guess... |

Hi,
I'm not new to the forum just new to posting.
I thought I would give my opinion as to the snake ID
It looks to be a very young Texas Indigo judging by the brownish head and dark stripe under the eye.
very cool to see
