I fish off of the Port A Jetties quiet a bit latley we have been trying to catch a shark off of the jetties, i was wondering what the best shark bait was, were new to this, we have the equipment just not exactly sure what the best bait would be? Also people have said that once you see the initial bite wait a bit before actually setting the hook and bringing them in is this true? thanks for the help!! |

Skipjack
Whiting
Jack Crev
Stingray-southern or cownose
Bonita
Cough..Redfish..Cough
In no particular order.....all make great bait. J/k about the redfish....that would be ILLEGAL!
As far as setting a hook.....depends on wheather your using js or circles, with that said i personally will still give a good pop to a circle hook.....with a j i give it hell
As far as an amount of time before doing so.....by the time i get a belt on and get ready.....Its time to fight!
There are exceptions......if i thought i was dealing with a tiger.....i would give her time.....JMO! Good luck! _________________ SOUTHERN CUSTOMS

Bro, no internet answer will ever fully answer any fishing question. It's all about putting in the time. I would tell you to use 11/O "J" owner hooks. Circles are great for less hook-ups. If a fish eats your J-Hook bait off a jetty, yes feed him. Let 'em run a bit and them lay the hammer down! as far as bait is concerned; use what you have. _________________ Fish hard. I'll assume you're casting baits since you're fishing the Port A jetty?
If so, I would recommend whiting heads and skipjack chunks rigged on a 14/0 or 16/0 circle hook and a GOOD spider weight to keep it in place and tight. No need to wait unless you're using bait that's too big for the shark to get the hooks in it's mouth. _________________ JJ |

match the hatch!
J hooks for larger baits, circle hooks for small chunk baits. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

I like whiting, skippies and blue fish...the last two stink, are oily and bleed a lot. I will put a good sized hunk on a 10 or 12/0 circle and sling it out as far as I can...but then again, I've also caught some nice sharks in the first gut.
