I've found that pouring my old fish fry oil through a green scouring pad rolled into a cone (with an overlapped lip) works fairly well for filtering out all the visible particulates out of my old oil. A coffee filter after seems to return the oil to its original color. What types of apparatus have people on this forum built to filter their oil? I'm curious what sorts of ideas folks here have come up with and what they're currently using. I'm considering making a 2-stage gravity-fed filter from PVC pipe that'll filter 1/2 to a gallon batches, using a scouring pad as the first stage and coffee filter as the 2nd. I want to put something together I don't have to babysit.

Do you refrigerate the oil afterwards? How long is used oil good for?

I don't refrigerate it and I probably use it 2 or 3 more times. Don't use it if it smells rancid, or gets too dark, or starts to impart an off taste to what you're frying. I know another trick restaurants do to clean the oil is to make hush puppies. Evidently everything is supposed to stick to them in the oil but I don't make them so can't say firsthand.

Thanks for the tips, going to try that. I actually started making hush puppies the last time I friend fish and they are SO easy, so fast, and come out perfect every time using the receipt on the back of the cornmeal bag.
