Start with buying a good quality bow. pse makes some good bows but mathews or bear make a better quality bow. mathews in my opion is top of the line when it comes to bows mathews also make a bow called missions they're a really good bow and there not as exspensive. my son has a pse stinger that he likes and i just got a missions riot that cost around $600 with all the accesorys sight peep arrow rest ect... if you have the money for a mission, mathews, or bear then i would go with that other wise get something like a pse stinger. The pse stinger is still a good bow and is cheaper but is a little on the noisy side when shot. Hope this helps you out a little if you have any more questions let us know im sure me or some others will love to help you out as much as we can. _________________ Eat, Sleep, Fish, Repeat |

| My suggestion would be to go to a bow shop and try some out. Get a bow that feels good and let them help you set it up. A hand me down or discount store bow is never a good way to start out. They are really pretty easy to shoot these days when set up correctly and fit your body. Then get out there and start shooting. I'll warn you though once you pick a bow up you may never go back to a rifle. Saturday morning will pushing 30 years of bow hunting for me. I still pick up a rifle occasionally but its just not the same. Good luck and let us know how it works out! |

I bought a 30-06 then a few months later bought a bow. Ended up selling the rifle to someone on this board cuz all it did was sit in the case |

Agreed go to Archery shop, also if you have a long term hunting place I would consider getting the best bow you can afford. The biggest change from gun hunting is you have to take scent control very serious. Most all animals are shot within 25 yds with a bow. Some practice enough to shoot confident in hunting situations a lot further but it's not as common and with the speed of arrow and stuff more misses will occur. Just watch a hunting show!!
In one year bow hunting you will learn more about deer and hunting than you ever imagined just due to the proximity of the game your hunting..
I was ruined since my first deer ever taken was with a bow, gun hunting is just not comparable. _________________ Take a kid fishing, best investment for them and our future of fishing. |

yes clydes is good, also ive found the archery department in acedamy to be pretty helpful as well. just be sure you get your draw length measured correctly , worst thing you can do is get a bow that doesnt fit you trust me my first time my the person who measured my draw length was off by one inch so the bow i got was one inch too long and when i released the string it got my for arm pretty good. I shoot a mathews and love it havnt had any problems, but i hear PSE and hoyt are very good too _________________

I would say to measure it twice just to be sure, and make sure your arm is straight , and you should be fine _________________

to find your draw length have somone measure your arm spand. tip of finger to tip of finger then divide by 2.5. that should be your draw length. mines 27 1/2 since most bows can only do whole numbers i had mine set at 27. remember its better to have a draw length a tiny bit shorter than longer. also when measuring your draw length be sure to have palms facing forward and dont stretch out just stand natrually. _________________ Eat, Sleep, Fish, Repeat |

| X2 on getting hooked on bow hunting. My son and step son are avid and where our farm is we can only shoot does during bow season, so I got a Mattews and this weekend shot a doe. I gotta tell you I was as pumped up as if I shot a 150 class buck. It will make your mouth go dry and your knees shake to first time you release an arrow at an animal. Now all I want to do is bow hunt. Careful cause it seems to be an incurable disease. |
