got to the pier around 5pm, stayed till 3am. new to this pier fishing- have caught a few reds tho. but friday nite- was a new story. caught skipjack, blue, stingray, and hard head all on live mullet - go figure. Saw very few reds being caught. The ones that were being caught were caught on dead bait on the bottom. They say they are still slaying the kings during the day tho. my question is, when the bull reds start running, will the water still be coming from the north? We generally fish the south side of the pier, but the water usually comes toward the pier on that side. What am I missing? There was no bait in the water to speak of either. I thot the hard heads and skipjacks liked the dead bait - any ideas?

We were out there Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Killed it on reds. Fished poo poo shad cut in half on the bottom. Saw lots of sharks caught and a few smacks. Only saw one trout caught from the wade gut on Friday night. Went back out Saturday night, anticipating another great trip, and didn't get a bite one.

Something that even some seasoned pier anglers never figure out is that the fish often set up on the upwind/up current side of the pier. It's not easy fishing as far as handling, with your rigs blowing or washing back under the pier, but I've been out there more than a few times when MONSTER trout were wearing it out not far from shore on the WINDWARD, up current side ONLY!!!! Shocked

I'm not kidding about this............. the lee side of the pier was light on fisherman and EMPTY of fish. When we could find or make a hole directly across the pier (or showed up way before the bite started at dark) we were instantly into fish, cast after cast. Not even using the requisite live shrimp on the lee side would draw a bite because the fish just weren't there.

From what I've read and seen on various TV fishing shows, the same is often true when fishing offshore rigs.
