|
|
| So I just moved to corpus and started going to TAMUCC. Met a guy I knew and we both loved to fish back home. We both know very little about saltwater so were going to need some help. Anyway we went out to packery channel because of what we read on here. We were using half alive shrimp and a weight. First couple cast my friend catches a smaller speckled so we were excited but after that we just fed the fish. It was like our shrimp were gone before the weight hit the bottom. We tried different sized hooks even treble hooks anything to get a fish in and nothin. Waisted a pint of shrimp. Any advice would be great. We're just looking to catch fish not lookin for monsters. |

| Corks with a deep drop 6' or so. Cut mullet or perch on the bottom. |

Dont know what type of reel you have but if you can fish the live shrimp ,
free style meaning no weight your better off or a lemon rig on top does have better results.0r you can use a very small egg sinker wetght too.
Give those methods a shot there is a lot other way these are just a few ways
also finger mullet and small pinfish are real good live baits to use.Buy a cast net it will come in handy good luck. _________________ ''ONE LAST CAST''

You can purchase pre made Lemon rigs there in CC or make your own--three way swivel, leader material and cork required. e.g. if you want to fish about 6' deep--tie cork (lemon) to about 3' of leader to one swivel eye. Tie about 3' leader material to 2nd swivel eye -- this will terminate in hook end, and the 3rd swivel eye ties to your main fishing line--voila--6' deep and fishing live bait off bottom--you can adjust depth by shortening (or lengthening) leader material between cork and swivel. Good luck and welcome. _________________ A little salt water in your veins is good for you! |

Welcome to the board. I enjoy soaking bait at packery channel just as much as the next guy, but if you want a little emore active fishing, go to the tackle shop and pick up some 1oz mannolures and 1oz Gotcha lures. They are shiny and heavy, like spoons. THey cast a mile.
Go to the jetty and cast them over and over in the surf side or near the end in the channel side, reeling in with a quick erratic retrieve. If the water is clear and theirs bait in the water, you will catch spanish mackerel as well trout and ladyfish and anything else feeding on small fish. Look for the birds to show you where the action is. You may go for 20 minutes casting over and over without a hit, but when you get into them its fun as hell. Be prepared to lose a few lures, or use a short black wire leader. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

| And remember that the leader should be BLACK as if it is not those Smacks will hit the leader and cut you off. |
