Spinning or casting set up for catching trout and reds ... size of reel/make ... rod length/specs ... line? I'm in the market for a new combo(s) and fairly new to fishing so your detailed answers are much appreciated. Looking for something in the middle of the road in terms of set up cost ($150-$250) ... don't want the cheap stuff, but can't afford the high-end set up either. Thanks in advance.

You can use either casting or spinning. My new favorite set up is an All star med/fast ASR rod (6'9" or 7') with a shimano sahara 3000. With 20 lb Power pro, there is nothing you can't catch in the bay. (Well, maybe not a big ol shark) The combo will run about $180 total, but is great quality for what you pay.
Good luck _________________ JJ |

I'm using various Shimano reels, from the lower end Sahara to the midrange Symmetre. They are very smooth and a nice price to performance point. You can spend a lot more but I don't feel like they are THAT much better.
Pick a stiff and light rod that feels good to you. All Star is good as are several others...like American Rodsmiths. I splurged for a Temple Forks Outfitters rod and love it but you'll be out of your price range quick if you go with a nice reel and top shelf rod. Spend the $$$ on the reel and get a decent rod. _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable? |

| My go-to rod is an 8' Long Handled All-Star (Falcon would work as well)with a 6500 ABU (old style) and works well in both the bay or surf. |

If you wade a lot the Sahara or Sedona would be my choice but if you are fishing from a boat step up to the Stradic, I have a 7 yr old Stradic that is still smooth and I fish about a 100 days a year(I now have 3 I like em so much). As for rods the green castaways at Academy are a good value @ 50$.
String it up with Fins braid and you will be very happy. |

| This could be endless! Everyone had their favorites :) I don't know much about fishing stuff YET but I would approach this like buying a gun when you don't know what your doing. Gather as munch info as you can about what is good (and not good) and then go buy what FEELS good to you. |

I could probably name about five more of my "favorites". You can never have to many reels _________________ JJ |

Hey flounder daddy, what do you think of the Fierce? Have you had it a while, how often do you use it, abuse it, dunk it, etc? Do you break it down and service it often? Is it still quiet and smooth, or is it starting to show any signs of wear? I'm thinking about getting one. |

| So basically, get a 2500-3000 size spinning reel with a 7 ft M or MH rod with a fast tip. That works for me ... thanks guys. |

I have some really good luck with my old gear. Academy, Walmart, Roy's. To some people it matters and some people it doesn't. Don't waste money on expensive gear if you're not going to use the heck out of it or just show it off. Taking care to clean and maintain your gear no matter what it cost you is my advice . I don't have much that people would want to steal but I have inexpensive proven gear that never fails. Med. 6.5' Pfleuger with a Daiwa spinning reel. Alameda rattler but throw lures mostly. Junk I tell ya, but it has some history. _________________ "Charlie Don't Surf" |
