I'll be surf fishing near Bob Hall Pier from July 4-7. I have 3 surf fishing set ups and will be fishing in the am (6-10 am). What can I expect and what kind of strategy should I employ. I'm thinking have having 2 set ups targeting the 2nd gut and one on the 3rd (I can only cast about 75-100 yards so I'm hoping this will be good enough to land the bait in the 3rd gut.) I'll be using mullet and shrimp for bait. What kind of pointers can you throw my way. Thanks in advance.

Well, that's with a 6oz weight inside a tennis ball. I go out to the football field and practice a lot. I haven't cast on a beach yet. But I do know the coastal winds will prevent my cast from being all that it can be.

Other than maybe big lou or nick, i dont see anyone casting into the 3rd gut! I guess my interpretation of the guts and bars are different, to me, when you walk off the beach you enter the "wadegut" and then the 1st bar then the 1st gut, and so on. With that said.....lotsa nice fish to be caught in the wade/1st guts. Good luck to ya!

hehehehehe....3oz weight and bait can FFFFFLLLLLYYYYY with a properly tuned reel and technique....i don't get wet any more...

that being said, it usually lands either front side of 3rd bar or right on the bar itself...

distance casting can be a pain though, many....MANY times, you are casting beyond the fish.

I've caught plenty of nice fish on live and dead bait this year in the wade and first gut.
My strategy is variety until a pattern forms. Try different baits at different depths, and locations, and pay attention to what is getting the most action.... Sometimes cut mullet on the outside of the first sandbar...sometimes cut whiting in the wade gut....etc...etc...
Shrimp and fishbites are a good combo, but I use those to catch bait for the bigger species.
Lately I've been catching them on carolina rigged croaker or mullet(if they aren't too big). Plenty of trout have fallen to that combo this spring and early summer. Hopefully this weekend my mojo will hold up this coming weekend...

i agree. dont underestimate the wade gut or "1st gut"" depending on who you talk to. the second gut can hold some good sized fish also. mullet, shrimp, fishbites, can catch most fish in those areas. skip jack, stingray, and jack crevalle are also a favorate bait if targeting species of a toothy nature.. Wink

good luck
chris.

Absolutely....one of my favorite guts to drop a big bait! For casted baits it would be hard to beat a big ole whiting head this time of year, there plentiful, good size, and full of eggs! Skipjack would be my # 2, only because they arent that durable.

I would agree with the previous posts regarding the shallower guts, especially early in the AM on a high tide. I would also select a bait specific for the fish I wanted to catch. If the water is fairly clear/green I would expect to find trout and reds, off color reds and whiting, etc.
