Ok guys, I got a problem. I really have no problem getting on shark, got what I thinks the proper gear (9/0) spooled with 80lb braid and a 100lb mono top shot. My crew and I have had numerous runs and have yet to land a fish. Every time we get a run, we set the hook, and the line snaps. I have lost over 10 leaders in 2 trips due or that.
Why does my line keep snapping? It looks like a clean cut most of the time.
Should I go to a heavier top shot, all braid? Running out of options here and am desperate to finally land one of those monsters to make it all worthwhile
Thanks |

My leaders are anywhere from 12-20'. And our line is not breaking at the leader, rather 1/3-1/2 way up the top shot. My bro lost 200yrds of his main line with yesterday's big run. It might be the drag?
The way we set it up our gear is as follows: Drop off bait, engage bail, and set on rod holder. Once there, we set clicker and lossen drag until we can pull the line slight pressure. Once the fish hits we grab rod and start tightening down until we can feel hard steady pressure from the fish and then set the hook. Our reels max out at about 35#drag, and we never lock them down. After every breakoff, I will grab the reel and am able to pull line off the spool with about 20# of pressure. My braid has never broken, 80#, however the 100# mono always breaks. |

are you fishing over a wreck in the surf? In Big Shell?
sounds like bad luck... you don't "snap" 80 or 100lb mono by locking down the drag |

| I know this may seem obvious but how old is the line and do you store it in the sun? Sounds like brittle line. Is there chaffing on the line where it snaps? |

oops just reread your post didnt realize it was breaking under pressure....thought maybe smacks might be cutting ya off. Sounds like junky line to me, i do lose a few in a years time but thats the name of the game! At least 10 times while hooked up on a fish is pretty exsessive! |

Rubbing on the bars makes sense, but how come we can retrieve a 2# spider weight and not break off? The line is brand new, spooled at Roy's last weekend. I have spent more on line this year, than in all my other gear, including kayak Last weekend I had my 9/0 spooled with 750yrd 80# power pro and 250yrd 100# smoke blue mono topshot. Had a run 6 hours later and lost 80yrds off my topshot 30 seconds after I set the hook. The line was warped the last 10 feet before the break. Following morning, my bro had a beautiful run (pick up and go type deal) and his line broke as soon as he pulled the rod out of the PVC rod holder. Sent him back to town to respool his reel with new line. He went 400 braid and topped of with 100# mono, smoke blue also. Came back out, 12 miles down PINS, and I kayaked his bait out to about 600yrds with a 2# mullet. 10 minutes after I got back to shore, his reel starts clicking and he gets it out of the holder. A few seconds later it takes off and he starts to slowly tighten the drag, when he feels the weight of the fish, he raises the tip up to set the hook ( we do not jerk with circle hooks). The rod tip begins to double over, while the clicker is still going, then it shots back up and the clicker stops. I'm estimating he lost about 50yrds of line. Happens every time, been out 4 weekends and we have only been able to fight one fish, which I was very under equipped for, spooled me and had no idea it was hooked
I do not know if we set up over any wrecks or if the shells are causing it? We have set up twice at 17.5 miles once at 23 and once at 12.6. Is there anything in those areas that could be cutting us off? For now, I am going to build a high rack to get my lines up and try again.
Thanks for the info and advice so far |

| Your problem is your leader. If you are kayaking 600 yards out, just imagine how many sandbars your line gets rubbed on and those guts are deep right now as it is. Make a long leader and use a decently good swivel and you should be good. Also clip off any damaged line cus frays in a line will cause a heartache. |

| Hmmm....and just how many bars are out there? Sorry man not sure whats going on, but i run leaders out past the 3rd bar and some leaders are 20' all mono, some are 30' all cable and i i dont run into that kinda of a problem. Like some suggested....run a float. And yes a high rack will help out a ton! One thing though, and there alot of guys out there that do it but, why run down the beach looking for good structure only to run a bait out 600 yds....i just dont get that concept. Good luck! |

There's got to be something damaging that line, either rubbing on bars somehow (though I've not seen more than an occasional mishap with that), or your reel or rod eyes or something is nicking it on the way out. Is it possible you're overspooling the reel and the line is pinching between the spool and frame? When you bring a line in that has not had a run what does the line look like, any damage etc? _________________ JJ |

That's my suspiscion.
I had an incident last year where the main line kept getting crossed on the spool...as in it looped back under itself while driving...and it kept snapping...I simply tied the mainline to one of my eyes while travelling, and the problem stopped...I know...stupid move on my part, but learning sometimes is painful.
