I have a bit of experience driving on Pins. Maybe 35-40 trips the past 8 years in my Chevy 2500 4WD pickup. I have been lucky and have not gotten stuck - yet. We usually drive down to at least the 20 mile marker and sometimes all the way to the Mansfield jetties. I know how to drive on the beach and different beach conditions and picking where and when to stop and not stop, etc.

I bought a lightweight small truck camper 1,700 lbs dry weight. I am wanting to pick the right time with the driving conditions and bring my truck camper down to the big shell area to spend a night or two later this summer and also during the fall.. I checked this website search feature but did not see much information about truck campers being used on Pins in the big shell area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Stay high and allow yourself a "way out" if stuck. Dont go during weed season, the jarring can and will separate/break the sleeper from off the camper and onto the truck roof. Ask me how I know. Shocked

What have you got? Pop up of hard side?

I have been down to the 30 in my old one. (1999 Northstar 800 pop up) I have only been on the beach a few times with the new one (Lance 845 hard side) and the furtherest I have been with it is the 10mm. We just have not been able to make it down.

My wife asked me how far we could go with the new one. I asked her how far did she want to go. She wants to go to the jetties. No problem in the winter but we would need 3-4 days. That is in our plans.

They are great on the beach and you will get spoiled real quick. enjoy and post pictures of it.

I forgot to add a couple of things.

You slow way, way down when carrying a camper. No overdrive and no 70mph. It is worth it.

Thank you for the suggestions and the link. We have a lance 825 which is the lightest best constructed hard side with a bathroom and a queen size bed that we could find. We are going to start watching for the right conditions to make sure our first trip goes well. I will give a update when we go. Anymore suggestions welcome.

That is a good choice for a first camper. You will like it. Did you join the RV web site?

A good area to go on your first trip is North of fish pass jetties. Turn on beach access road #2 and then left or south when you hit the sand. Down a bit is a free area. Normally good driving conditions and not to far off the path to start with.

When we go we carry two additional coolers. One for the fish we wish we would catch and a second for drinks. The frig is for food only. If you store drinks in it, it will not be able to keep the food cold. Door openning and closing to get drinks.

I just returned to Colorado from a trip to the PINS. I have camped on the beach for years, at the 35mm with truck campers. They all have been pop ups, until this year. I camped June 1-7 at the 35mm with a F350 crew cab Ford with a 2003 Northern Lite hard side. The trip down took a couple of hours. I ran the low tide and did not need 4x4 much. On the way out I drove the middle road in low range and it took 4.5 hours. My truck has 35 inch tires that i air down to 30 pounds. We love the pins and our Beach House. I will post a picture Soon
