I have never heard of Asp Venom Killing anything. Though I know someone who left his glove on his porch and crammed his hand into it the next morning and an Asp had decieded to bed down in the thump cavity.
Very nasty looking wound site! His hand look cartoonish from the swelling.
This is how he described the Pain;
He is/was a greenhorn city slicker first time country home owner and prior to this incident he had decied to do some gardening in shorts, around his new home in the country. He was kneeling on the ground and took about 30 Fire Ant Stings! He said the Asp was more painful.
I suppose an Asp sting could put someone into an anaphlaxsis state. It all depends on there immunity process. I know someone who was rushed to the ER after 6 Fire Ant stings.
But, A Man O War has killed people, and if I'm not mistaken, it will also leave perminate scarring at the wound site! _________________ "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son." |

Again, have you ever been REALLY nailed by a man o war???? In my many times living in Corpus and climbing trees while catching locusts (cicadas) I encountered many an asp, but had been warned by my mother at an early age to stay clear and DON'T TOUCH IT!!!! I will openly and honestly admit to not being "lucky" enough to be nailed by one, but I've had way more than my share of man o war stings, some really bad. I ask you; will an asp sting make you black out and/or throw you into shock, sometimes needing emergency medical attention? A man o war can and will deliver such an experience!
I'm not saying that an asp can't or won't, I'm asking here. |
Yes an asp can send someone into anaphylactic shock. Happened to my dad while he was driving home from a hunt. Nearly killed him. His truck crossed into oncoming traffic then swerved back to the median and centered a large oak. The crash ironically is what saved his life. The jolt /airbag/loud crash is what restarted his heart. Totaled his Z71 but thank God he was not seriously injured and no one else was hit either. Now he always carry an epi-pen.
Also, I have been hit twice by man-o-wars and it wasn't much of an issue for me but I was only stung by a few tentacles. I believe they are not true jellyfish but I could be wrong...would that affect treatment? I used pee the first time and it instantly relieved the pain and burning. I was young and not allowed to consume alcohol at the time. |

Me and Waldo was fishing one time and he got stung by a jelly fish on the face. We had nothing to put on it so I had to pee on his face, the only problem with that was he kept sticking his tounge out and was peeking with one eye. Then he said it was my turn to get stung. I told him "homie don't play that". He did not like that game. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

HA! Now that is funny!
Reminds me of the joke about 2 guys hunting and and one gets bit by a rattlesnake on the ying yang. Friend seeks help and the doctor tells him he must go back and suck out the venom. His friend gets back to him and asked what did the Doctor say? and his friend says, "He told me you were going to die." _________________ "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son." |

I have been stung by a man o war 2 times. Once while surfing i took one across the chest and pretty much ruined a good day of surfing. While it didnt leave permanent scarring i did have marks for a few weeks. It made it hard to breathe. And the pain was intense. The other times was at sharkathon got a little man o war around the calf. Still no scarring but heck yeah it burned. I was climbing a tree in my mid teens and smashed an asp against a limb with the tender underside of my arm. WAAAY worse than either man o war. |

A Friends episode comes to mind...
Joey: That's right, I stepped up! She's my friend and she needed help! If I had too, I'd pee on any one of you! _________________

My mom was born and raised in CC and was tomboy until 18 or so. I asked her yesterday if she'd ever been nailed by an asp and she said once, and that it hurt like hell and lasted for a while, BUT......................... she also told me that she'd never been stung by a man o war..................... _________________ Dave

Stingray trumps the Man-o-war. Ever cried and laughed uncontrollably for an hour? Bad news.
From my experience, I get hit by Man-o's on the beach, where my vehicle is and my first-aid kit is, therefore that's easier to treat immediately.
My experience getting hit while wading is there is no relief unless I wade all the way back to the vehicle... The pain might not be as bad, but the waiting for treatment is worse. _________________ 1.2.3,4,5. once i caught a fish alive.

Nobody's arguing the point about stingrays, that speaks for itself! The subject was jellyfish stings and somehow the asp got drug into this...........
It all leaves me wondering on whether it's possible to get a "partial" or low percentage asp sting as it easily is with any jellyfish or similar critter. An asp has a very small surface area when we're speaking of the area that does the damage. Something like a man o war has an unreal amount of tentacle length and potential stinging power. Having a short section of tentacle rub by you or even having one wrap around you is bad enough, but not the "bells and whistles" event that it easily can be, and what I'm speaking of here. I would wager from my own experience that 95% of jellyfish and/or man o war stings fall into this category (not the REAL thing!), so those involved have no real concept of what I'm talking about when it comes to pain and agony...................... _________________ Dave
