Last week, I was jerking pompano left and right. Towards the end of the day, this dude and his son (I presume) come and literally start fishing on top of me.

I am a big dude, but am not a hothead, don't get worked up, and am really pretty soft spoken, but this just kind of upset me. I'm not talking about they were a few feet/yards away...I mean, right freaking next to me.

To make matters worse, the dad was in a wheel chair and missing half of his left leg, so of course I'd have felt like a big jerk telling them to move it.

I didn't say anything as I was about to wind up the day anyway...but I thought it was pretty rude, and wanted to tell them to move it down a bit.

What is the appropriate way to respond to this, that doesn't involve throwing a wheel chair bound man and his son over the side of the rail?

Laughing

Asking them politely to move down a bit to give you room sounds like a reasonable request. If that doesn't work, just keep casting across them. Laughing

It is pier fishing after all. Shocked

Thanks...I don't fish the pier that often, so I wasn't exactly sure.

Like crocs do on your feet I would imagine. The sea gullers and close proximity is why I am not a big fan of fishing on the piers and jetties though dang the fishing is good at times.

I too would have asked for them to give me a little room, though if I would have seen what would have been a disabled man with his son, I probably would have set my pole down to help them catch fish, show them the rig, how to retrieve, etc. I can only imagine the frustration and desire of wanting so bad to catch a fish with your kid, when you're having to do it from a wheelchair. No doubt that is why they almost climbed up your butt, that strong desire took over. Any other yahoo would have had the He who shall not be mentioned treatment from me.

you need to try some combat fishing on the Kenai River in Alaska when the red salmon are running! Very Happy

Actually that pic is the Russian River near the confluence with the Kenai, but you get the idea. Very Happy

why you no just push him down the pier?

i would have helped them out, especially since he had a kid with them and you were about to leave....never know, might be your new best friends.....

others i would have cut their line. Twisted Evil

Even though they were right next to you, I would have not said anything at first. Especially if they were not crossing the 'lane' that I was fishing. If they became a nusance by crossing my line, etc. the first couple of times I would be polite and untangle the lines (if needed). If that pattern continued, I would start cutting their line to remove the tangle (handing them both ends of their line) so that I could continue fishing. At the same time, you might also have some great conversation and make a new friend...
