Saw this in Todays paper. Im sure it wont be the end of it.
Nix loved sport
I read the letter by Kathy Arbuckle ("Fish mishandled," March 4) and was appalled to learn the tournament had fallen so far from what the late Tom Nix had created.
I worked with Tom on the "Tom Nix's Saltwater Angler" almost from its inception. Anyone who knew him knew that he practiced what he preached. He loved fishing and anglers with respect for the sport. He wanted the species to be there for many generations to enjoy a sport so close to his heart.
The magazine then was not all about the almighty dollar. It was for informing, guiding and bragging rights. He was on the docks every week at every tournament.
When he created the "live" tournaments, he checked every detail personally to make sure it lived up to its name. It is sad his hard work and great legacy have fallen by the wayside.
Bring the tournament back to its roots, up to the standard Tom set, and what it was designed to do: make sure everything possible to help the fish survive the weigh-in and release is done.
If not, drop the pretense and just have a fishing tournament with no thought of the fish, the species or the future!
Pam Greene

Editorials, "opinions" selected and printed by the Caller Times. Written by someone who may have issues with the tournament. You know what they say about opinions. The debate continues...
Mr. Nix was very passionate about fishing, tournaments and his paper. Since Capt. Behnke took over I think he has done a great job with the paper and he kept the tournament going. The tournament was sold to Speedy Stop. The Bash remains a catch and release tournament, I applaud them for that. _________________ Grind |

Tough issue at hand. Maybe the folks that run the tournament will heed some of the criticism and look at the way they run the tourney. Let's face it, if you are going to run a live weigh-in for Trout, you gotta have your act together. Feebil fish compared to their brother the Redfish. I hope they work it out if nothing else for the memory of Tom Nix, he brought a new and novel concept to the sport that benefits us all. _________________ Later,

fyi (previous email from Bayslammer) - Pam Greene is not "just someone who has issues" with the tournament......she is an active conservationist, long time friend of Tom Nix, mangager of the port Aransas south jetty, organizer of yearly beach cleanups, etc. etc. etc. etc.
she does not "just have an issue" with tournaments.....
don't go slamming people you don't know.....
sorry about the sideline, too easy to get distracted from the topic I know, but easy on people you don't know..... |

Pam did the publishing work for the magazine when Tom owned it. I think they'll get it straightened out. It's hard to get it right the first time.
The Speedy Stop folks bailed the tournament out when no sponsors showed a couple of years ago.
One thing I have noticed in the photo taking is the grabbing of fish not just behind the gills but into the gills a bit with the fingers. I did that one time for just a second and killed a 6lb surf trout by doing so. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

My apologies if I offended you or anyone else. You are correct sir, I do not personally know Pam Greene. That being said Pam Greene's credentials do not prohibit me or anyone else to take issue with her opinion. I applaud her for her work and her stance on conservation. Obviously she feels that the Baffin Bash tournament has been mishandled and that is her personal opinion. I spoke to several anglers who fished the Bash tournament and they told me it was a well run tournament. I fished the trout series tournament the following week and it was a great tournament as well. _________________ Grind |

| I'm not gonna get in a verbal war with anyone, I just want to say something similar to what has been talked about alot lately by the people who use this site - that is, to me, this all boils down to the way trout are handled. They are a siclid and you can't mishandle them as you may be able to with other fish. I did not and do not fish tournaments so I really don't know how things were handled, but I am not real happy with what I heard. TopDog had said on a post that he saw numerous trout being mishandled the first day just for photos - then going into a cooler. Why have a live tournament if the fish are dying anyway? A better plan is a must for these types of tournaments, regardless of who use to and who does run them. |

Come on guys help me out here! I'm just trying to get a sponsor for next year. I guess if my name was on the leaderboard that would help. Seeing trophy trout belly up in the marina would turn my stomach as well. The guys cashing the checks are not complaining. Don't look for me to have a Speedy Stop logo sewed on to my fishing shirt next year. _________________ Grind |

| Tom Nix was well known up the coast as well as in the Coastal Bend. His old TV show the Saltwater Angler was one of the first "Texas" saltwater shows out there. I believe the name "Bash" should always be associated with Tom. With Speedy Stop's first tourney under their belt, let's hope they get the fish handling thing under control. Tom would. |

Being just a spectator at the wiegh-in I felt one problem besides the handleing was the final tank they were put in. It was just water that was pumped in from the marina. Unlike in yrs past they went into TPW clean oxygenated water tanks, then were released at the hatchery. Back then some did not survive also but more had a chance instead of going back into murky 2cycle oil filled marina.
Why did the TPW not have thier tanks there for this tournament? This was the biggest shock to me. Hopefully next yr this will be solved. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |
