Ok so maybe I have a good king fish rig a Penn 950 as a 9ft ugly stick loaded with about 350 yards of 30 I wanna run live mullet or ribbon fish off a balloon rig would that work????

Depends on how far you run it out but it sounds like it would.

It should work but like Tyler said, how far you plan on running it? The farther out you run it the less line you have for the King to make its run. Cool

Then you need to worry about one of these Big Tarpon grabbing the bait , They can dump 350 yards of line very fast, had one last year to run out over 700 yards and it didn't take long. Shocked

Just something to keep in the back of your mind . Wink

If you're fishing from boat you shoul be fine. If you're fishing from land (pier) I would recommend more line capacity. I hear people all the time hollering " lock him down" in my opinion this is not what you wany to do. I personally want the King to run as far and long as he can so I have no issues when trying to gaff the fish.

Off a pier should be plenty. I use Penn 7500 and 8500 with 20 pound line, yet to be spooled with kings up to 30. Proper drag play is important to not worry about getting spooled, but of course thats half the fun!

Um run it as far out as I can cast it perferably by the t on the Bob hall or off one of the jettys of corse I'll be running dual steel leaders

Should be ok, when a big smoker or a Tarpon spools you go by Roy's and get Braid with a mono topshot and you will be good to go for most anything from the piers/jetty other than big sharks!

Yea cb I was thinking the same braided line with mono tip I trust my Penn reels a buddy of mine has been houndin ne on gettin a 4/0 honeslty for my surf rig I may go the 4/0 but I prey I get a 150+ pound tarpon I do wanna fight it on light tackle and I wanna feel the raw power of the silver king

I've accutly hooked one just one once beach front I was useing a zebco 808 of all things with a old Abu garcia Texas popping special rod. The tarpon went about 4 feet and it accutly broke my 808 Damn near spooled it took my gold spoon and headed toward cuba my dad would have had better luck he was useing a old dawia spinning reel he bought back in 1970 the way I would describe that 4 foot tarpon was like hooking up to the bumper of a 69 camaro ss and going full throttle trying to stop it I can only imagine a 6 ft tarpon probly be compared to a old Hemi but thats what I'm after even wanna try fly rodding for kingz

The Tarpons have allready started rolling on baits at Bob Hall Pier, The last count I heard was 4 but none had been landed.
I beached one last year and my analogy of it would be: Like a top fuel funny car on a half mile track. Cool

most people dont know this but the tarpon is an Atlantic fish only introduced into the pacific through the panama canal...they have bread and spread out over a vast area in the pacific up and down the pacific coast of the americas...

my biggest tuna is around 200, couldn't imagine hooking a true beast...have caught marlin around 800 and it felt like tying to the back of a Porsche and trying to catch it...i have bad luck with tarpon always hook them in a pier, mangrove, boat dock, another boat cut me off...dunno hopefully this will be the year...only one i have ever landed was 10pounds..hooked almost a hundred in various country's with disastrous results mostly...

Plenty of them at the pier. Tha state record (best I could tell) was 210 # and I've seen fish that I think would break this.
