So, after doing some reading on here and trying to totally abandon my habit of doing the same things over and over again, I've decided to re-vamp my strategy for next weekend's fishing trip:

Short rods in the surf: Going to have one pole with a carolina rig baited with fishbites and a gulp shrimp, and another on which I will be changing between a 1/2 oz johnson sprite and a cocahoe minnow on a jighead with a piece of fishbites.

Long rods in surf: Going to have two poles with fishfinder rigs and a chunk of whatever i catch on a circle hook. Will either cast it into one of the guts...or if my pal brings his kayak, will yak it way out yonder. Will be doing this at night primarily.

Jetties: Going to try a lemon rig for the first time...should i put a gulp shrimp under there or what? Will also be casting a spoon near the rocks and possibly putting out a long rod w/ fishfinder rigged with cut bait.

Question - I love circle hooks...but can I rig a soft plastic on one to fish w/ a carolina rig? Or will that mess up the action of it?

I hope this works for me, I plan to fish hard and grind on until I get some fish. Also, keep in mind I will be fishing in Surfside (closer to my neck of the woods)...not the lovely waters of Port A or Mustang like I would prefer. Sad

Saturday is looking good for kayaking so I would do my best to get one down there for yaking baits and fishing BTB. There have been rumors of surf trout showing up, so I would definately try to hit them in the morning and evening. I prefer a topwater for them but then again I just about always prefer a topwater in any situation Confused . Smacks are all over as well so you may want to take some small steel leader material. For the long rods you may have to contend with weed. Try to get them up as high as possible nad over the weed. I haven't fished the jetties much. If the weather forecast holds for Sat. I will be doing a little BTB.

Hey Robdig, where are you getting your marine/weather forecast for Saturday and is it detailed? If it looks like a good day for BTB I will be out there for sure. I would love to get into the smacks/jacks/bonitas.

Here you go. It's a little early, but it's looking good as of right now.

Wind (click on the location and it will give you the forecast for a week or so out.

@Big Los, pertaining to your question on circle hooks and soft plastics, I use that set up myself,w/a float. Circle hooks is all I use but the daiichi circle wides, either 3 or 4/0.the artificial stays straight, the gap is wider than most other hooks, and stays sharp a good while

They say never say never but,
A live shrimp or small baitfish on a small circle or a #8 or 6 treble with a split shot about a foot above ain't bad around jetties. Cast out, let it drift down keeping mind the rocks will keep your stuff.. wind and current tell you what to do. Never mind the bow in your line as you pick up some slack. Trout rod gig. It is not cool but can be fun. Fun beats cool sometimes.
