|
|
With the weather so nice had to try the close rigs. I wanted to go to one off PINS but didn't wake up early enough. So about 11am I load up the malibu 2 and head to bob hall. I knew they were catching there so figured I would skip the crowd and head towards the rig.
On the way out we saw fish popping the surface, threw a couple lures and nada. So kept heading out. Get to the rig and sheepshead were so thick I probably could have got a limit with a cast net. So we quickly catch our limits and drop chunks of pompano from the day before to see if we can't get hooked up with a shark. No luck. See lots of ling swimming around but were being finicky and not touching anything we tried. A monster school of jacks cruised by but weren't prepared for them at the time.
Nice day just to be out there and even better when you catch!
Sorry no pics.... no internet at home.... just my phone... |

Never ate a jack and don't know anyone that has. They make good shark bait and are an awesome fight.
I thought about taking Mullet out there but didn't and was kicking myself for not doing it. Next time im so taking some.
Do you use them live or will dead work? What's the best way to target ling so next time I might have the upper hand |

If you try a jack, bleed it and throw it on ice right away...very very few people eat jacks most keep for shark bait...
Ive heard ling caught on various bait/artis....
-Mullet
-ribbonfish
-crab
-Jigs
-4" Gulp shrimp
i plan on trying a DOA terror eyez the bigger size...
Jacks will eat anything if they are feeding _________________

We hit the rigs down off of pins... sounds like it was the same as you saw... but yeah, the ling (i hate calling them anything but cobia.. ling sounds demeaning in my book) hit EVERYTHING we threw at them. Gotcha plugs x2, crippled herring spoon, DOA shrimp.... I do have a super secret working technique that induces a bite!!
Landed a nice jack, some legal red snapper and i shot some sheepies for target practice. |

the best way to prepare a jack is to smoke it on a cedar plank, then throw the fish away and eat the plank.
You guys are crazy eating those things.

| One artificial that has always produced cobia for me is a large rattle trap. Something about the vibration seems to trigger a bite when they are finicky. I just got a new kayak today and plan on hitting the rigs a bunch this year. I have paddled a ton of shark baits out and fished the laguna out of a yak quite a bit but haven't done much BTB. |
