|
|
I've got a 7 foot Ugly Stick Tiger, Medium Heavy, with an AVET SX 6/4 MC magged reel I was practicing with late this afternoon after work. This is the second time I have used it, and was seeing how it felt. I am casting in the area of 90 feet using a 3 ounce weight. With practice, how far should I be able to cast with this set up? I adjusted the settings the way I like them, the feel, and spent about 30 minutes casting time after time and did not get a single backlash. I could have gotten more distance with a heavier weight I believe, but I wasn't sure what distance I might be able to cast with the AVET and only a 7 foot rod.
What do you all think?
Thanks!!

That is my favorite Rod Bud and the 3 oz weight is exactly what I use. I am mainly on my boat and on occasion will land on an island. If cast from the island out it goes pretty darn far and takes 1/2 my spool on my Abu Garcia 6600. Idk how far that is but I'm quite happy with it
P.S. I believe your Rod is a 6'6" _________________ "Do not call my Jeep a Car ever again " |

Do y'all mean yards? 30 feet isn't very far. And really, neither is 120 feet. I can cast my 4/0 on a football field with 8oz weight almost goalpost to goalpost.
Now my sealine on a 11foot rod can easily clear a hundred yards with 3oz weight |

5500 Abu on my 7' US Tiger medium spinning rod goes a easy 80 yards with 2oz pyramid and 17lb mono....goes a extra 40 yards when i actually clean it hahaha too many trips to bother cleaning everyday _________________

I have been talking the the techs at Charkbait where I bought the reels. They've had me make some changes that are going to increase my distance quite a bit I believe.
I am used to simple, old reels. This AVET SX 2 Speed is a lot more complcated than anything I've used before and it has more settings, etc. that I hadn't understood. Now, I do to a greater extent, so my distance is improving, and before I was casting 90 feet while doing it wrong.
With my long rods, I can cast a lot farther, too, just because of the fulcrum effect and leverage, so I'm making progress.

Longer rod and find a weight that fits the 'sweet spot' of that rod.
I have a 10' Tica TC2 surf rod with a Daiwa Sealine BG30 that with a 4 oz. weight and a single drop leader with shrimp and fish bites I can knock down over 100 yards in 'calm' (windy) conditions...an I know it's this far because I've got 120 yards of mono as a top shot on top of braid...and I am just getting into the braid.
I also have a 13' Breakaway HDX with a Sealine X 20 that I can cast pure comical distances.
90 feet isn't that far.

Well things are getting better. After talking with you all and discussing the reel and technique with the guys from Charkbait, my distance is up today to between 130 to 150 feet; that's a 50 to 60 foot improvement nearly overnight with good advice.
I worked this morning, thinking all the time about casting at lunch, crossed the road to the open lot, and started casting with an ease and distance I hadn't had, what a great pleasure and fun!!!!!!!
Now, I'll just keep practicing.
Thanks, guys!!

I'm glad it's working out for you. I kept out of this because I wanted to see what others would say, and they pretty much mirror what I thought, and can do.
Something to remember, and I'm NOT ragging your equipment or saying anything's mismatched. If the rod overloads even with a 3 ounce weight, you can cast further with LESS weight, not more. Even with a mismatched setup, technique and skill are far more important than weight................... just like martial arts and many other skills. _________________ Dave

I am not sensitive!!
I've got no problem at all with any kind of suggestions, rods, reels, technique, the whole shootin' match. I know Ugly Sticks aren't considered top-o-the-line, but they have caught lots of fish. What would be an optimal rod for an AVET SX 6/4 MC 2 Speed?
I actually have quite a few rods running up to 12 foot HDX and LDXs from Nick and similar Harnells, but I don't have any heavier duty 7 to 7'6" rods other than the Ugly Sticks and a couple of Diawas I believe.
Make a suggestion; if better rods will help, I will buy them.
Thanks again, guys. Your suggestions and those from the guys at Charkbait have helped me greatly over the last couple of days; I greatly appreciate it.

| Try that reel on one of your longer rods. I would bet you would like it more. |

Ray, the important part was "Even with a mismatched setup, technique and skill are far more important than weight................... just like martial arts and many other skills." _________________ Dave
