I've posted this earlier but for my money, you can't beat a Temple Forks rod. Here is a link to their good saltwater 4-piece, 9' 8 wt.:

If you want a brand name, I'll sell you a used Sage, but I'm going to take the money and buy a Temple Forks to replace it.

Sage RPLX, $400 but you can do much better than that on EBay. I guess my point is that the Sage is now my third-string rod - I use a Temple Forks 8 wt and a 5 wt for starters now . Like the action muich better than the RPLX.

Try the new G Loomis Pro4X. It should be $350. Lighter than other rods in the same price range. Better action too.

Roys should have them.

Check out Madison River Fishing Company website. I just got a TFO 10wt from them for about $149.

Just got my Loomis Pro4X. I will have it at Roy's Fly Day on Nov 19 and it will be available for demo. He may have some already in stock.

My primary saltwater setup (the one I have for stealhead, Alaska salmon, and occasional trip for Texas reds) is a 8wt Sage FLi with a Ross Momentum 4 reel.

For freshwater streams and rivers, I use a combination of slow action and fast action rods, depending on what i'm fishing for and what flys i'm using (i.e. nymphs versus dry fly only). But I chose the FLi for salt because it offers (in my opinion) the perfect blend of fast action and strength that I want in an 8+ wt rod, and it is still very affordable. It's not as light weight as the higher end Sage rods, but it is a great balance of performance and cost in my opinion.

If money is not an option, you should consider the Sage Xi2. They don't make it anymore (replaced by the Xi3), but it was such a great design that it still brings top dollar. It is the next generaton of the RPLX mentioned earlier in this thread, but with a stronger mid section and faster tip action. Great great saltwater rod.
