As promised, here is what I have encountered so far, on my trip.
Started out Sunday morning at the Isla Blanca jetty. The stench along the rocks getting to the jetty was bad.
One thing, there was plenty of bait. Mullet schools coming through in steady droves. Shad swimming just away from the rocks. But no bites. Nobody catching anything.
Sunday afternoon went up the island. Found a good looking spot. Cast out double rig with shrimp. Bingo, double-header of whiting. Thought it was going to be easy, but that is all I got.
Decided to move. Found another spot, and set up. I was able to catch some shad and mullet. But, the bites were kinda slow. Only ended up with a few more whiting.
Left about 630pm so I could catch the World Series.
Monday morning headed back up the island. The guard at beach access 5 said there was a fish kill overnight from there and up the beach a ways. I did not feel any symptons, so I decided to give it a try.
Don't know what kind fish they were but they looked like large shad, only bigger belly. I did see a few gafftop and mullet, and maybe one snook.
Well, found a spot and caught a few whiting. But, not one school of shad went by. Drove over to the Convention center and after a couple of throws, had enough mullet to go try again.
I did manage a few more whiting. Saw what had to be a bait ball getting attacked as every bird in the area swarmed and dove for about 15 minutes. Of course, they were way out of reach for a land based person.
Overall, I coughed just a bit. So, not miserable conditions.
I will see what happens thru Thursday and will report if there is anything worthwhile.

try driving north towards the jetty and look for gaps in the dunes that turn into open passes into the bay during big storms/hurricanes. there used to be spots like 3, 5, 7 miles south of the jetties and this time of year there would be both reds and drum... _________________ onward thru the fog... |
