9-17
Hit the water with my brother in law looking for some crawlers...
saw a lot of reds but no hookups, i threw one times haha let my brother have at it and he was a bit rusty with lures lol...
wind was going to pick up and a storm was brewing so we headed back
i hit up my little drum friends that are always at launch and my brother in law hit a tailer
called it a day..
9-18
Met up with corpus fisherman toyakornottoyak and osopup, osopach from Team Oso
Hit the water about 6 o'clock and we had a lightning show the whole drive...
waited about 5 minutes at launch and we all decided to head on out
the other guys were blind casting while i was trying to find some crawler reds...
only time the sun tried to come out
found one oversize and i turned around nobody was near so i waited to pup to catch up and by then it had headed for deeper water
come to find out pup broke his paddle a good 1.5+ mile away, but thanks to toyakornottoyak the day was saved...ya got some good karma coming your way brotha
we headed down the shoreline and found 2 more reds that got away from us
conditions werent that great to be sightcasting ...super cloudy little windy, worst conditions but we tried..
i headed off to the rest of the grazing field...drifting and blind casting in guts i had a big trout hit right in front of the yak a good 25+ but drag was too tight..couple jumps and headshakes and it was off
kept moving down the shoreline hooked into 4 reds...that came unbuttoned =/ what is going on here
met back up with the gang and found out pup had hit a oversize red that spooled him and spit the hook...was one of those days for all of us...
had a little fun for a bit shared some stories joked around
toyakornottoyak tried to stand on his kayak haha highlight of the trip

I thought I told you to get my good side! lol
I would like to take that karma and trade it in for a big fat RED, like the one that spooled pup! When I saw that beast splashing 25 then 50 then 100 yds away I knew it wasn't going to be good! It just kept going and going and going, AMAZING! Sorry PUP I wasn't laughing at you, it was just a nervouse laugh, I promise!
It was a good morning and will definitely do it again! _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

good stuff man, thanks for the report.
Toyakornottoyak, fight the urge to stand on it like a skateboard, and face forward with your feet shoulder width apart. That way you can balance better and adjust to the left/right rocking of the yak. Those WS tarpons are actually really stable when compared to other kayaks, it just takes practice. This morning I got a limit of reds and then some while I was standing on my kayak and poling around in about 6-8 inches of water. Many of the reds were tailing, but others sat just below the surface making no wake at all. If I hadn't been standing I would have never seen them. Once mastered its an awesome way to hunt for reds. I would think it would be great for fly fisherman too, as it seems like it would be easier to cast standing instead of sitting.
Bummer on the paddle - what type of paddle was it? |

yea standing helps a ton! Those reds are beyond sneaky almost never get a wake from them
pup had a marine raider paddle from academy...i use the same one when poling around glad i never broke mine..had to make a push pole from pvc today in fear of that... |

ltorna, you hit the nail right on the head, A-Tennis was telling me not to stand like that and I could hear him but my mind wouldn't let me,LOL...It was llike a tourist using a spinning reel upside-down for the first time!
My YAK has the old style seat so standing on it would be a bit difficult, I wonder if fabricating a removable false deck that I could put over the seat to make it a flat surface while I pole around would help, this may help but it would also higher my center of gravity as I'm already 6ft 2" and weigh (???),,, possibly could make it worse! _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

I usually stand in front of the seat, kind of where my legs are normally when I'm seated. I think you are right about the center of gravity. Being short helps me big time.
I like to use my paddle/pole to help me balance, but that can be dicey too.
YEsterday I was poling myself over some hard sand going pretty quick to get in casting range of a tail - when suddenly my paddle sinks into a hole of thick mud. Kayak keeps going forward, and the paddle (which I am relying on for balance) stays put in the mud. You can guess what happened next. Needless to say I missed that red. |
