Is it frowned upon to fish other people's green lights if they are fishing them or are present? We have them and if were not there or if were not out back I don't care but if we are out back and especially if were fishing them I think it's discourteous to fish them. I'm not one to think all the water is mine, but the lights actually are since I paid for them. If I do encounter discourteous fishermen how should we handle it? I just thought I'd turn them off but they take a while to power back up.

I would think certainly if you are out back trying to fish them then it would be rude for others to "seagull" your lights. And as you said if you're not there then you don't care is how I would see it too.

As they approach, are they even asking you if its OK? Then you can say "no". Otherwise, way uncool.

I live on a canal with lights that I have bought and paid for. If I were fishing them there would be words exchanged. If I am sitting on the deck not fishing I would think it is rude. If I am gone or inside there fair game.
The simple solution is in a song, " Turn out the lights the party is over"

My brother encountered it a few weekends ago while he was sitting out back. We rented last year and I never encountered it. Plus the location was more discrete. This year were right out on the corner, so I guess I can expect increased traffic. I guess as long as I'm not fishing them I'll just let it go.

Thanks,
OS

Not cool if you are actively fishing it, for sure.

But, if you are just back there smoking a brisket or something, that's a little different.

It seems to me that when you choose to live on a navigable waterway to which others have access, you choose to give up some privacy. Especially if you choose to run light in that waterway, thereby creating a concentration of a public resource.

i live on the canals and fish others lights but usually very late with minimal noise and disturbance. now i have my own but still "visit" others lights, i keep only what i can eat and use circle hooks. I feel the water is everyone's and honestly how can you get mad if any one of the 3 or 4 neighbors that can, cast from his yard and put a bait next to your light in the middle of the night. Where else is he going to fish the empty blackness next to his house or the trout rich waters next to your underwater lights, point is everyone should be shown respect if your having a problem(with the owner) fishing a light you probably shouldn't fish that light, and if you are having problems with people fishing your lights go tell them to bug off or turn your lights off trust me they will get the point Cool

I fish my own light, and occasionally other peoples lights too, as long as they aren't fishing them. 2 stories

On one occasion, I goofed and put a single cast into a light where somebody else was fishing from their dock - it was pitch black, about 2 am, and I didn't see them. When I realized he was there after my first cast I apologized to no end, and the guy was cool and said it was no big deal, offered to share his light but of course I paddled off to another one, giving him his space. I felt really stupid, but he kept catching trout so all was well. Honest mistake.

On another occasion I had a boat pull right up next to me when I was in my yak in the middle of the night fishing a green light. I had my light on and he still didnt see me - blows my mind. It took the splashing of me landing a 20 inch trout skipping right into my yak for him to realize - "OH S&^@ I didn't even see you man" Just as I did when I goofed, he apologized big time and trolled over to a different light. People make mistakes - just be courteous.

The WATER belongs to all Texans regardless if you have IMPROVED IT with lights. That said, courtesy at least requires permission if someone is in the yard or fishing. If not, don't leave your light on if you don't want people fishing it. You no more own the light in the water than the light coming out your windows or the light from your yard lights.

Once I get my CC, you can expect me to fish the canals at night occasionally.

Why do you need a CC to fish the lights at night? I have fished the lights in the past and I always passed the occupied ones and even the ones that have dogs that bark so I won't bother anyone. But seriously, why do you need a CC to fish the lights?

Regarding turning the lights off. We asked the installer (Gary Lunt) about doing that. Not because we don't want people fishing the lights when we're gone, because if I'm gone I don't care, but because I'm cheap and didn't want to pay the electricity charges if I'm not there. He said not to do it. I think he said alge will grow on them and screw them up or something like that. But, regardless, he said not to. I don't know what truth there is to that, but I figure he knows what he's talking about.

As for this issue, I know how I'll handle it.

Ask them to move on as you are actively fishing your own light. If they give you lip, unplug it.
