Went offshore today 40 miles in the little boat! Ran straight out and started freediving the rig. Saw another monster snapper. Grabbed my tank and went down 130 and he just kept going with his 5 buddys all over 20 pounds!!!! I saw these fish 5 times through out the day but they would not let me near. I shot a 40 pound amberjack a bunch of other nice mangrove. Trolled a stick on the way home and caught a schooly dolphin. Got to the 8 mile rig and there were brds diving and fish smacking the top of the water trolled and hooked a spanish let him go. Let out my bomber again adn hooked a king. While unhooking him I got hooked due to my lack of pliers.... The hook went in the fat of my left hand near my pinky. Luckily I called a friend in the meidcal field and she brought me lidocaine. Lidocaine, pliers, scalpel, and iodine all fixed up on my kitchen table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shot one snapper adn I am not sure what kind it is.... I will post a pic.

| That's a hefty amount of school for sure, couple semesters back I took 16 it sure hindered fishing for awhile. I wont see much salt for awhile these days, decided to take a job at last second and moved from the coast. If I can get a hold of my advisor about getting me into an already full calculus class I sure as hell wont be doing much fishing. gotta do what you gotta do. |

I am going to have to teach all you guys about how to EASILY extract fish hooks from skin, and NO it doesn't involve fishing line. It involves having a 14 or 16 gauge sterile hypodermic needle in your fishing kit.
The needles cost about 25 cents each at your local Farm and Ranch such as Tractor Supply.
Basically you slide the needle point slanted side down against the hook so that the needle goes in the same hole as the hook until the needle gets to the barb. You slide the slanted part of the needle that has the hole in the needle over the backwards facing part of the barb, lodging that backwards part of the barb up in the needle hole. Then you merely slide the hook and needle right out of the skin as there is nothing left protruding to stop the hook from coming out. Try it on a hook embedded in fabric. It's good practice and will be what I take pictures of for you to see the method in action.
Here is a link, it is called "Needling".

| It would also be nice to have some way of numbing the hook site (other than booze). It just so happens that you can purchase lidocaine over the internet on Ebay - Who'da thunkit?? A couple of drops of lidocaine on the wound and numbness sets in. I think my first aid kit is going to need some of this. |

Just curious how many hooks you have removed from yourself/others using this method? _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

VA doc used it once on me, and he showed me how easy it was. I have removed hooks numerous times from clothing and a pair of leather gloves. Spend a buck on some needles and try it in cloth for yourself. It's actually easier to get the hooks out of leather/skin as there aren't any strands/fibers to get caught on.
You will be amazed at how easy the hook comes out. |

A good discussion of the technique below:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0601/p2231.html has diagrams:
"Needle Cover Technique
The needle cover technique requires dexterity on the part of the physician. It works well for the removal of large hooks with single barbs but is most effective when the point of the fishhook is superficially embedded and can be easily covered by the needle. After skin preparation and administration of local anesthesia, an 18-gauge or larger needle is advanced along the entrance wound of the fishhook (Figure 4). The direction of insertion should be parallel to the shank. The bevel should point toward the inside of the curve of the fishhook, enabling the needle opening to engage the barb. It is important to have the bevel pointed in the correct direction so that the longer edge of the needle matches the angle of the fishhook point. The physician should advance the fishhook to disengage the barb, then pull and twist it so that the point enters the lumen of the needle. The physician can then back out the fishhook (the same way as in the retrograde technique), taking care to move the needle along the track with the fishhook.
FIGURE 4.
Needle cover method. (A) Advance an 18-gauge or larger-gauge needle along the fishhook until the needle opening covers the point. (B) The fishhook and needle are then removed at the same time. |
