This post should not incite or provoke a negative attitude or retribution toword sharks.

The Father, a coaching friend, just wants the fishermen and beach goers to be aware of this incident. Odly enough it has not been reported, as the hosptial said it was going to do with TxPW - or at least that's is as far as it went.

PLEASE READ THE LAST PARAGRAGH OF FATHER'S REPORT

Filed with Internatioanl Shark Attack file - excerpts - Me, my wife and 14 yr old son immediately upoun ariving at the beach fished (croaker) the first sand bar about 50 yds past the road (North) - no luck - moved to 2nd sand bar - as soon as we were there - wife 24 inch trout - I walk the trout back to the ice chest (We don't use stringers in surf) - got back,,she had a 20" - took it back, then she had another....took it back.

My wife switch palces so my son could hit her spot - he was 20ft to my left she was 20 ft to my right. while watching my line I heard my son hollar "SHARK, SHARK", as I look at him a 5ft shark was on TOP of the water (half way out swimming fast at him). he backs up, hopping backwards wich now puts him on the edge of the 1st gut. I went to him, telling him to settle down as there were @ 5 people behind us swimming. As he was backing up he dropped his 5500C3 & Allstar rod - 10 ft away he said, "Dad he bit me", I thought, well he probably scraped him with his skin, then he said that he could not put his foot down,,, I knew it was now serious, this was about a 15 sec time lapse form his yelling

My wife and I hauled him to shore - shark was still around us - the people on the beach thought stingray until his foot came out of the water and they freaked. poured distilled H20 in it, wrapped it w turrniquit - went to hospital from 5:00 to midnight - 54 stiches - Doc said looks like multilple wounds - 4 -5 on foot and 1 on shin -next day my son said that he couldn't hit his nose cuz it was too deep - so he kicked/moved his feet everytime the sharks nose hit his shin - the Dr. said that he is lucky to have his foot and not to have bled out

**** The sadest part for me is that, as a Father, my son just got tall enough to stand at the 2nd sand bar (5' 10")and condition were perfect. along with my wife I felt that I woudl have a surf fishing buddy for life - now I feel that I have lost that - I'm not for sure if he will get into the water again and I don't blame him***
.............................................................................................
The Father reported to me that his son did not cry, panic or scream theough the whole ordeal - not even in the ER were he had +100 shots of Novocain in each wound so they coudl sew.

To the Son from "Coach" - many of us live our entire lives never truly knowing, only wondering about how we would act in a perilous situation. There is a small "fraternity" of us that through various circumstances, have been put to the test. Even a smaller number of us know and are proud of what we are made of/ how we acted. Many people aspire to have Courage. You have just proven... to yourself that courage will always be your companion. Welcome to the club!! Your Father is very proud of you.

Coach, you and your wife are excellent models of responsible parents that teach by example. And as for your son, he's no longer a boy - he's a man !!

This was my friend - not me.

my fellow coach (I am not a coach any more and do not deserve the respect of the title) is an extremely respected coach, a great friend and a great family man - he just asked me to post this so that his experience may help others- he wants NO attention...because, a coaches code -is.. NEVER take responsiblity for attention or success, it is for the kids- only in failure do coaches take responsibility.

I am only the messenger...I hope all my learn from this

Wow! and I thought the one inch hardhead fin I got stuck and broke off in the top of my foot almost 7 years ago and still there today was something but it carries no weight to this!

I sure hope that young man gets back out there and doesn't let this waiver his love of fishing bc that would be a shame...well after the wombs heal bc that saltwater stings lol. What a brave lad and an inspiration to us all!

God bless and I hope for a speedy recovery

Wow!! I think as a Dad I would have trouble letting my kids get back in the water. I hope his injuries heal, and so do yours Dad.

I am glad he is OK and I hope this does not deter him from getting back out there some day. It's scary considering how often my sons and I fish for surf trout. Good luck to him on his recovery and props to the other Coach for raising such a brave young man....

It could have been much worse. I'm glad the young man will be O.K.

Hey Coach. We might want to write about this. I'd like you to speak with Caller-Times reporter Jesse Martinez to see whether we could interview the father and son. Reach Jesse at 361-886-4315 or martinezj@caller.com.

Thanks
