So I am thinking about DeepSea HQ for a 5 hr Thursday afternoon or a 8 hr on Friday. What is the real difference between the two (other than the obvious 3 hrs!) Is the time difference spent in transit or fishing? Do I expect to catch the same kind of stuff? I don't want to spend the extra cash if the only difference is an extra 3 hrs of transit time.
Also, the only other time I've ever done this was on a weekend (I do not remember which charter) and the boat was so full that the experience was pretty lame. Half of the clients spent their entire time trying to untangel lines, and the other half caught the limit of fish in 20 minutes, then we headed back - stopped for some shark fishing and about the same thing happened.
Any advice is welcome!
Thanks. |

| longer is usually better because you can get to some of the better offshore structure, deeper water, rigs etc. |

5 hour trip = drifting for kings.
8 hour trip = running for some shallow water snapper and running flat line off the stern for kings.
Either way, stick with DSH and hope for flat seas. (Or, if you have the cash, private charter and get on some better fish and spend WAY LESS TIME untangling lines ). |

It's a buoy that is owned by and transmits data to the National Data Buoy Center. It's the nearest buoy to Corpus (SE) that records wave heights/periods.

| I agree with the other posters in that the 8hr trips go farther out and provide better opportunities to find a wider variety of bottom fishing..IMO, the most fun and my catches have always been much better than drift fishing closer in...Best of luck to ya, either way ! |

| Looks like 2-4 foot seas are predicted. Is that rough or smooth? Sorry for the dumb questions - I live 230 miles from the ocean! I don't wanna take my kid out for 8 hours if it'll just be time for technicolor chum... |

As of 10 AM the seas are runing at 3.6 feet at 5 seconds. If your son has never been past the jetties be sure you get him some kind of motion sickness medicine and take as per instructions. 2 to 4's are fishable but some one pron to motion sickness could get very miserable. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |
