Howdy All -

I want to pull the heads on my outboard....Johnson, 1998, 115 HP, 60 degree V, oil injected (model J115ELECM). After speaking with a dealer about parts, they said that all I need is 4 new O-rings for the heads. There is no actual head gasket. My question.......is this correct? No head gaskets, only 4 individual O-rings.

Thanks in advance,

T

Thanks gunbuyer. I was planning on keeping my eyes closed and just 'using the force'......a little humor from Beverly Hills Cop 2. In all seriousness, i wanted to have the parts onhand. I live in SA and my boat is in Corpus. Parts for that old engine are not always readily available so I am trying to be prepared and have everything i need next time i go down.

are you just bored or are you losing compression?

and yes, some of those old loopers just have rings around the holes, which is weird, and I'd be real tempted to at least use a thin coat of aviation gasket stuff or a really thin piece of gasket material. just make sure if you do go with a custom gasket job make sure that you don't block your water jacket exchange ports.

If I remember right the 60 degree has head gskt the loop charged has a
o-ring. (I think that's right, I can't find my book)
I haven't worked on one in a long time but if I were you go ahead and get the whole power head gasket kit you might need them. The kit isn't that expensive if you get a aftermarket.

I have been having some overheating issues. i have flushed, reverse flushed, flushed with 'salt terminator' or something like that, checked the impeller, changed both thermostats and both temperature sensors. Last time out, overheated again. Water pressure gauge shows great pressure....i have a low water pick-up and i can peg the 30 PSI factory gauge. I am starting to think i may have combustion chamber gases leaking into a water passage. my plan is to go down and retorque the heads and then go run the hell out of it. if it overheats again, then i plan to pull the heads, change gaskets/o-rings, make sure the head surface is true (if not, put them on a flat surface and carefully sand them down till true) and then replace.

Any other ideas out there?

For some reason I'm thinking it's not the motor but the prop that is causing the problem. Do you have another prop you can try?

Capt Mike - its funny you say that because that is on my list also. I had heard somewhere that the prop could introduce hot air into the system. I started having problems when i had old reliable prop 1 on. I changed out the themostats and temp sensors and unfortunately changed props at the same time. 1st time i took it out, I ran it as hard as i could and had no problems other than prop 2 cavitates/ventilates/slips way too often....no overheat problems though. Next time out, it overheated about midway thru the day. After it cooled down, i ran it easy for a while and then opened it up for the ride home. no problems. U know, typical BOAT (Break Out Another Thousand) problems.

thanks for the help

Prop. my not be pulling enough water when underway. I would still try another prop before you tear it down. Sometimes the problem can be right under your nose and a esy fix.
If you changed all the things out you say and you did the job right, which I'm sure you did then the next thing I would check would be the prop. By the way is this motor on a tunnel boat?

Very Happy
again I would look at the prop before you take it apart.

My water pressure guage will start flipping when I'm runnung mid-range
(3200 rpms) with my current prop. I don't overheat but my water flow to the motor is interrupted as the blades turn. I have no problems at lower or higher rpms.

Soooooooooooo.....even if you are a tourist from SA or a local that spends
everyday on the water, goofy things happen.

I sure appreciate it Capt. Mike. Hopefully see you on the water sometime. On another note, I have been blessed to have a place on the island. I fish the ULM pretty regularly for a tourist. My grandparents lived in the Bluff and are buried right there in that little cemetery off Laguna Shores. Grandpa used to be a commercial fisherman (over 40 years ago). There used to be a little house with a big 'deck' on the 2nd or 3rd channel out from Laguna Shores that we used to fish together on. That being said, i am not a true tourist... Very Happy
