Cos Way Bait Stand (a friend of the forum) has them for $10 a dozen. Running 2.5 to 3 inches in length. _________________

For the cost of a couple of sabiki rigs (size 6 is about right) you can get pretty much as many small croaker and pinfish and piggy's you want right off of most any pier or jetty.

Bought them at Clems last Saturday for $8 a dozen. Used 2 dozen of them at my favorite trout spot behind Mustang Island. Not even a bite!

I typically fish the surf, although now I am interested in fishing the bayside.
I've always known that croaker the size of finger mullet are a popular live bait but don't hear much about whiting (aka Southern and Gulf Kingfish).
I do know larger whiting are used as cut bait in the surf though.
Are finger sized whiting as desirable or effective as similar sized croaker and mullet?
I use a decent sized cast net to catch my bait and in the surf at times I might catch a couple dozen or more of these small whiting.
It can sometimes be a hassle because so many get stuck in the net and I try to keep as many alive as possible whether keeping or returning them to sea. |

I've used whiting fingerling in the surf for trout and reds but never used them in the bays. But then again I hardly ever use bait of any sort in the bays.

That seems top be at odds with the netting surveys which for the last number of years has been reporting increasing numbers of croakers. I have seen plenty when I come to Corpus. Go over to the pier on the naval base and look over the western side of the pier and you will find hundreds swimming close to the pier - right by the pier edge. Caught bunches of them on sabiki rigs several weeks ago.
