I have been wanting to try PowerPro but dont want to buy a big spool (kind of pricey) until I am sure I like it. I thought I would put a 150 yards on my Penn 4500ss... but can you put braided line on top of mono? I am afraid it would cut into the mono? If that is ok to do... I normally tie a blood knot, will that work... or maybe a uni knot is better?

Yes you can put braided over mono. Its actually recommended in the instructions of powerpro. I always tie a uni to uni and never had it fail. Its an easy knot for me. There is also other recommended knots on the instructions for the powerpro.

I would look into sufix performance braid, I have had better luck with it than powerpro. Both are great products though. The slim beauty knot is a great knot for lite line connections between mono and braid, but I think the strongest connection is a Bimini twist to worm knot.

Have had better luck with the albright or the double version of the albright (double simple simon) than the uni to uni. I found the uni tends to pull out, and the albright has a nice low profile. YMMV . . . go with what works for you. Lower weight braids are so damn sharp they tend to cut through your mono easily with some knots.

But braid over mono is fine as long as the knot doesn't mess your your casting.

This is really a great knot for lite line connections and super easy to learn with a very low profile.

I have used it with braided on top and with mono on top (on bait caster). I can't remember the knots I used but have not had any problems with either way.

It really only takes an hour to master and start with braid ... Much easier to tie biminis with braid line.

Yeah, a friend was trying to show me the bimini twist the other night. But it hurt my hands and I was pretty lit. Some weird technique where you tie it around you knee then work the knot down. You gotta pull like a sumbiatch and really needed gloves.

I thought I caught on a bass show that it's one of the few 100% strength knots out there.

Once you go braid, you'll never go back Shocked

Loosen your drag and keep your fingers out of the way

Thanks guys for the advice!
I think I'll try PowerPro over sufix performance braid just for the price difference.

Rhino, the slim beauty knot looks like a winner!

frayed, I think someone is showing you the wrong way to tie a bimini twist. You do not need to pull hard, 20 twist, spread the lool with your knees, pull up on the main line and let the knot tie itself. one overhand knot on the right or left side of the loop then two overhands on both.

I've used powerpro for years and love it, however, lately I've been using FINS windtamer and find I like it a lot better. Less wind knots then with powerpro. FINS has several types but I find the Windtammer to be better on our windy conditions. I too use a uni to uni and have not had any problems.

Fireline doesn't get the wind knots and Frayed use the uni to uni it's much easier though less sexy than the Bimini BUT you have to have 13 wraps on the Fireline and it won't slip. Trust me!

I use the Uni Knot both tying my braid to my mono backing never had an issue.....I also use the Uni to tie on a leader when using braid. I seldom use a leader but when I have the Uni has held strong with some good sized Reds!

I have used braid since back when the gorilla braid came out then the spider wire, my problem is last year I cut my finger almost to the bone on a cast with a spinning reel and am now shy to cast out on my surf rod with a 4oz weight. The lighter rods are not a concern for me but the surf rod hurt like a bi@#h. I tried tying a mono shock leader but I sucked at the attempt the knot would stop the line on the spot. What ratio braid to mono works best #wise I used 30# braid on 50# mono and well........the knot looked like a freaken bead.
