So, I've been reading on the internet about pompano. It seems one of the best places to catch them is on the close rigs within 30 miles in Louisiana. So I wondered why we catch them here so often in November. And, why do we not catch them like that all year. They like warm water between 63 and 90 degrees. But, prefer between 83 and 90 degrees. Anyway, I believe they dont live here all year because we have too many competitors in the surf during warm months and not enough close rigs to support the population. Luckily Lousiana does. That alows us to catch them as they head south for warmer water during this time of year eating our coquina shells as they go. What do yall think? _________________ Fish hard. I'm no "pomp pro" but the fish are saying something different. In Texas and the Panhandle of Florida the pomps are in the surf in number only when the water is cool or cold. 63 - 90 degrees is a HUGE preferred temperature range for a fish..................................... I would be willing to bet that info is erroneous.
In Destin where the water is always clear, one can wade in the surf in the summer months and see lots of baby pomps right around their feet, feeding on little morsels disturbed from walking. Catching a large one at that time of year isn't rare but also not the norm, AND the water temp on the Florida panhandle is even cooler in the summer than that on the coastal bend! Most of the larger ones have moved into deeper, cooler water at that time of year. _________________ Dave

When kayaking the rigs, I often find BIG pomps hanging around the legs. They are very finicky, though. _________________

| I make a pompano trip every year usually the week between Christmas and New Years when the Surf lays down. I think its the best time of year to target them. Go back and view old reports on this board and you will find we catch them year round in the surf. |
