Well...I officially have the itch. Looking to start a new venture and try my luck at spearfishing. Anybody have any pointers on a good entry level speargun for targetting sheepshead, mangroves and other medium sized fish at the jetties and inshore rigs? Also, any other gear that would be useful. Thanks in advance.

I started with the JBL 52" Woody- I think it was a little much for a beginner gun. I would say start with JBL 38 special- Also depends on what you are targeting? Jetty spearfishing will be fine with the 38 special. But big grouper/AJ's, Dolphin, Snapper, etc you might need a bigger gun.

How is the vis @ Packery right now?

Not much more I could add to that sage advice. Very Happy

For the nearshore, the JBL Explorer series is more than enough to get you started. The only thing I would add is most of the Dive Shops locally are kinda overpriced for these things, and you can get much better deals online.

They are very helpful and knowledgeable, just $$$.

I agree JBL 38 special is a good starter. Keep inmind it will NOT take down big fish! I just bought a 54 ab biller teak sea hornet yesterday!!! Here is the pics from today!
