Fish as close to the structure as you dare with the lightest/least visible terminal tackle.
Good luck.......................... eat a few for me!!! _________________ Dave

Only 1 trip so far this year (missed this window the past weekend...too many Kickball and Little League tournament duties) and the numbers were very low on the SPJ. But... I was not in my most favorite spot either. I posted the smallish fish I got with the sheepshead some time back, but Alex is going to wreck the water for the next week or so.
Let you know when I venture back out. CS |

| My brother came to visit from Maryland and has caught two Mangroves, bigger than I have ever caught! When I saw him pull up the first I thought it was a redfish. Caught them at SPJ on live finger mullet. |

Speaking of sashimi, I got a chance to do the pepsi challenge b/t red snapper and a beeline snapper. The beeline won easily. More tender, sweeter meat. Both caught same day and prepped by an experienced japanese chef. I think I still prefer those little mangroves that you can pick up at the jetties though, as they are super mild and the meat has great texture.
Do yourself a favor when doing sashimi. In addition to that good soy sauce I posted, pick up a Japanse Oba leaf if they have any at the azn stores in CC. Slice thin, along with some scallions and eat with your sashimi. Mmmmmmm. _________________ Jeff

The cold cold winter got alot of fish. I wouldn't be surprised if the grey snapper population took a hit. _________________ I am a pirate 200 years too late. |

I remember a couple years ago about how a resident population had become established at various places in our local bays, as opposed to a migratory population, due to several mild winters. The article also stated that the reason we have no local bag limit is that the first good hard freeze would wipe them out regardless.
Anywho, a couple months ago, after our pretty hard winter, I tried a spot in the bay that I had previously had close to year-round luck at, but it was pretty much devoid of life. I am sure that they will show up in the typical migratory type spots like PAJs and the PJs, but I am curious to see what happens in the bays during the next month or so.
I recall hearing various trout gurus expressing concern regarding the invasion of these voracious little beasts in the LM, most of which blaming the PC. So I guess it won't be all bad if they got hammered in the winter. Although personally, eatswise, I'd take a mangrove over a trout most times. |

Tried to put this in this thread earlier, but it got all bastardized:
Well, as to at least one of the gurus, I don't really want to put words in the guy's mouth, so I guess I will just repost his own words:
Capt Mike Singleterry wrote:
The lack of rain and the higher than normal salinity levels for sure didn't help fishing here this year and for sure created a problem for the guys that fish in the AP area north. For those guys without the rivers running they have a tuff time catching fish.
As for the ULM things here were really slowed down by the lack of rain
it seemed after the March brown shrimp run there were no more shrimp in the Laguna. Without the shrimp nothing will prosper. The Brown tide that was in the very upper Laguna in the spring and early summer didn't help at all, I think the fish hate that stuff and from what seemed to me like forever the tiderunners finally showed up in Late June and July. These fish are almost always here in the ULM in May and in the Landcut in March and April.
I also failed to see any numbers of Blue Crab. They sure seemed to be trying to make a comeback over the past couple of years.
Redfish are still doing good inside the ULM south...but after the redtide the breaders might be in a little trouble.
Now for the BIG question....where the Hell did all these Mangrove snapper come from? I have never seen this many not only in the Laguna but in the gulf, even before Packery. I don't feel comfortable with all these agressive little fish around. Reall don't think our Laguna can support a healthy trout & redfish population with this little aggressive beast...
and all this crap is IMHO.... Very Happy |
