We had a go of it this weekend and brought out the sharking rigs and thought we had a good chance to battle some toothies . . . not the case. We still have a ways to go in our refinement of techniques. If anyone has suggestions on the following, I am all ears:

Weights: When using large baits (cow nosed, half of jack etc) how much lead do you use and how much is too much. I lost a complete rig cuz we could not get it back in and then could not keep baits from drifting . . .

Deployment of bait from kayak: How is this best accomplished (bearing in mind I am not an accomplished yakker).

I think that is it pretty much. No runs on anything but caught some huge whiting (one went 16"). My buddy took them home for dinner. Caught a submerged chum bucket with a bunch of redfish carcasses in it Saw lots of mullet in the late afternoon and water clarity was awesome, weed not too bad where we were.

On the way out, saw a guy with a Bonnethead. He was poking it with his rod trying to release it . . . he looked scared to touch the shark it so I helped with some CPR and watched the little fella swim off. Hope that gives me some good karma with the shark gods . . . I need it.

Size of lead depends on three things Size of reel and line, bait used, and current present.

Don't use more lead than you can reel in. I've bent a 114hlw spool on a spider weight that was too big.

Fishes like Jacs and Bonito etc. generally use more lead than Rays. Though with no current you could use two ounces and get it to hold.

For me with my 6/0 I usually go with 8-10oz stainless wieghts with no more than two pounds of bait. (I don't go for the gargantuan species.)
