Which is why it makes it tough sitting in the home office looking out at a pretty day.
Last night we took the dog out for a five mile jaunt at Malaquite on PINS and the surf was an 8 or 9 on a 10 scale - no new weed coming in and lots of bait. As I was walking I noticed several recently dead sand dollars that looked like they had been chewed on so I assume there are pomps out there too. I started looking in the curls and saw three 8 to 10lb jacks cruising. Later in the day I saw a full grown jack 25lbs plus looking for a fight as he patrolled the 1st gut.

Skipper called and said the Spanish Mackerel are thick this morning at Packery.

I caught probably 15 Spanish yesterday at SPJ. Lost another 15 or so. They are hitting everything you can throw. Silver spoons are the best. Finger mullet everywhere. I took home 7 Macks all 23"-26". Fire up the pit tonight with mesquite wood, red onion, chili petins, real mayo, wheat crackers....yeeeeaaaa....Mack salad....I did see one nice Pomp caught on a lure early morning, other than that it was pure spanish....every cast. And yes, the Philipino guys were out in force and probably bagged 100 spanish between the 10 of them!!!!!!

10-4 on that! The water is super clear. I saw 3 guys scubba diving hitting drum and sheephead by the rocks, and a few guys on the far end catching spanish macks.

Tarzan, I would disagree as far as them eating anything lol. We were out there for 4 hours today, didn't catch a single fish. There were literally 10-12 people in the last 40 feet of the north jetty, EVERYBODY was throwing spoons, rapalas, mirrolures, manolures, you name it. One guy, no lie, ONE GUY, was casting some tiny little silver and chartreuse lure, looked like a popper of some sort, never seen it before, and he was catching them left and right, must of had atleast 10. His buddies threw the same lure, nada. But the smacks were VERY picky when I was there. Few whiting came up on live shrimp but other then that, the water looked great, lots of bait, but the smacks were finicky, no reds/trout/sheepies on the entire jetty when I was there. I guess its just a matter of getting them when they feel like eating. Also, saw a group people keep short fish AGAIN at packery (they left 5 minutes after I got there). it pisses me off. Not to mention a number of people who just threw the smacks on a stringer, and left it out in the sun for the fish to bake. Then they would leave the dried up fish there on the cement and leave, because they didnt want to keep dried up fish.

All in all, great conditions, very disappointing day.

gotta use flourocaron leader. in that ultra clear water, the leader makes all the difference. I'd be willing to bet that the guy throwing the same lure that was not catching anything was using steel. That lure you are talking about is called a "Gotcha!" They work great.

I was playing around with the smacks a couple days ago and it was pretty frustrating. They would hit stuff on a flouro leader pretty regularly, and promptly cut you off, but as soon as you put a steel leader on, they wouldn't touch it. I don't mind losing a jighead and a soft plastic every now and then, but losing a 3 or 4 dollar spoon on every third fish gets old.

My haywire twists look like crap and I was using the wire I use for kingfish rigs. That probably had something to do with it. I am going to wrap up some leaders with some smaller wire, different and cleaner "knots," and go direct to the spoon. I will also try some 50lb flouro, as 30lb didn't cut it.

If anyone has been down this road before, I'd appreciate any tips.

ITORNA 1 I used that gotcha plug in silver and chartrues with a white buck tail today, I just loved the action on it. Has a treble hook underneath and a single hook as the tail end. I seen them before and just recently bought two, They have uvbelievable action on them.Well i lost both of them to smacks,Im going to stock up on them as soon as possible . Cool Heres some advice on using a shock leader,Dont use a barrel swivel.Try a blood not to tie the two lines together. I think thats how i lost most of my tackel,From the smacks hitting the barrel swivel. And thats because it was colored black. Cool
