Not incredibly useful feedback, but thanks!

You didn't find this incredibly useful!

"If you have never bought a used boat before, please do yourself a favor and get someone with experiance to do a thorough checkup on the potential money pit!"

Wink

I'll tell you that all the questions in the world are only as good as the seller is truthful, inspections, surveys and experiance is the best you can hope for and even then you are still buying a used boat.

Wish you all the best luck in your endevor.

I kind of thought the same thing about the "not very useful" quip. Most everything "useful" that was said after that was already said before that.... Wink

Who knows about people. No disrespect meant to the poster as always.

Some folks are dyslexic and may take a while to pic up on what they read...................................... or not! Shocked Then again, I for one have more than once read a post MORE than once and still missed a word that totally changed the intended message. Cool

Remember when you spotted that 1979 Pontiac Trans-Am with the 6.6 Litre Olds engine, T tops...a know it all entering his senior year in high school, and knew he had to have it....wait....I digress. What was the question?

I have been using Manuel at Portland Marine for years and he is an excellent mechanic and he is honest. I'm looking at a used boat on Friday and I asked the owner if I could take it up to Manuel for a check-out and he said yes. If he had said no I'd forget about the boat..

Generally, I try to stay out of the internet battles and just spend my rec time fishing. So forgive me for not addressing your specific issues with my comments. I didn't mean to get anyone riled up, I just wanted some help.

Nobody's riled up friend, I don't see any battles either. Cool Just a little friendly back and forth! Wink

Good luck on the used boat. What one poster said about a battery switch is darn good advice but only works if the owner USED it!!!!!!! ESPECIALLY if you have an aluminum boat as I do, there is current flowing through the hull even with everything off just from the motor being grounded on the transom. For year I fought a slow current draw that would drain my battery even with everything shut down. When I installed a battery switch and kept it turned off when not using the boat, problem solved.

Here's the skinny. There are wires next to each other and they terminate at a specific locations such as you ignition switch or a plug-in for an appliance, such as GPS, depth finder, etc. So, you've got live voltage between 2 wires spaced sometimes less than and 1/8 of an inch apart. When saltwater moisture fills this gap, it starts to conduct current (something about negative ions in the chemical composition of salt). That can cause your battery to discharge or the contacts to corrode. If you have an aluminum boat, that's just one more thing to conduct current and corrode. That's where the cutoff switch comes in and turns off voltage to everything. Like someone else said, "It's only useful if you use it."

In my initial comment, I didn't put down to ask the seller why he is selling the boat because you just can't trust his answer. It may be as simple as the fact that he just doesn't know (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.) Like I said before, just have a good mechanic check it. By the way, I would never buy a used boat, but then again, that's me.

When buying a used boat, I like to watch the movie "Capitan Ron" before I purchase.

Diesels love oil like a sailor loves rum. - Yes! Why is that, Captain Ron? - Nobody knows boss, nobody knows.

Be prepared to spend some $. You'll be fixing all the problems the last guy who owned it had. Buy a new one and spend money fixing all your new problems.

We bought a used boat last duck season. Never ran like the seller claimed. So far we've had to buy a new motor....that's all.

Everyone has their own opinions.................... not being made of money, I'd rather let some other joker take the depreciation hit on the new rig!!!!!

I totally agree about previous owners and unfixed problems or badly maintained systems, but that's why you get a survey or take the rig to a well qualified and TRUSTED mechanic to get the motor checked out before you buy. The money that you might spend on those two things is way less than the depreciation hit.

It's just like the old argument about buying a new car or driving the old one. That has been proven many times over to be a freaking loosing theory! Even buying a good used car just as a good used boat, you can save $$$$$ over the new one and have a great package if you just do you homework, be smart and don't let desire get in the way of common sense.

Good stuff! Now for a difficult question: How does one convince his A) wife B) partner C) Choose not to respond let him buy a boat?

Is is better to ask for permission or beg for forgiveness?
