I won a trip for two on a private offshore fishing trip. Does anyone have any idea how much I should tip the captain of this boat.
Thanks,

Find out how much he would have charged you if you were to pay outright. If the trip was fun (not if you caught the hell out of some fish) I would tip 10-20% depending on how hard they worked. Sometimes even more tip. I've worked offshore so i know how it is. Plus, if you give them some tip and you want to go again with that captain he will remember you. Every charter we ever had got logged and those who didn't tip didn't have the trip they could have most of the time cause noone likes to work for nothing which is what we were paid on our check. Oh, good luck and have fun. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

Since you won the trip I'd say tip a bit better than normal.
But on another note on tipping in general just post the price you want to get paid for your services and take out the guess work. (ok...that was my small rant for other "tip" situations) _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

a tip is and should be a thank you for good or excellent effort or service.
people who may or may not know what is required of a job always expect a tip just because they are there, not because they did or didn't do their job or improve your enjoyment.
a good example is floor people at a casino. they did not bet, they did not enhance your day, but hit a jackpot and they're all over you expecting a tip. heiferdust.
i tip what I feel is appropiate or deserved not what is expected or demanded. that varies from nickle or dime to 25% of the bill. _________________ ccbobber |

Remember, this trip was donated and still has a lot of cost to it for the Captain. I would push you to tip extra good if the service is good. If you won(or purchased at a discounted rate) a donated trip; the way you treat your captain and crew might influence their desire to to donate again. This can include the tip but can also be respect on the boat. If you want to further the cause of your charity make sure your Captain and crew understand you are greatful for their contribution. Make sure they want to donate another trip next year. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

Right on Bob!!!!! I heartily agree! On the offshore trip last May I believe the cost per person was $145 but I personally thought that the guys worked their butts off (Captain too) so I threw $30 into the tip pool. Calculating it now that comes out to 20+%. If the hooks had been sharp or there had even been a hook file on the boat or the line/gear had been better quality, I would have tipped more, but it was still a great time and I thought that $30 was fair.
Next time you won't see me out there without a hook file to go along with the other gear being MINE! And before I get attacked by some on here, I'm not running down the Charter folks. If I had to deal with as many land lubber morons as they do day in and day out, I wouldn't use any better eqiupment either............................... it was just a point about the tip. _________________ Dave

I was thinking around 100-120.00. Thanks for the input. I didn't want to foul it up.
