Reportedly one of the back coves in Tropic Isles had "hundreds" of floaters this week. According to the account, TPWD came out to investigate. The person who made the report complained of breathing diffuclties, burning eyes (a la red tide) and terrible odor. I haven't checked on a update since last night.
I personally witnessed about a dozen 6-10 inch mullet belly up in one of the front coves over the weekend. |

How can the red tide still be killing fish when the water has been so cold that it killed fish?
Seems like fishermen can't win with The Government on one side and nature on the other.

the kills in the canals are not the result of red tide, but the one in the harbor was. the red tide is still out there regardless of the low temps. we found it in low numbers in all of our samples last week. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

| TopDog - in the samples that you're taking, is the red tide in sufficient density to have an impact on marine life? |

4 questions for Topdog, central scrutinizer and other marine Biology folks,
1) What needs to happen between now and the break of Spring to knock out the red tide concentrations?
2) What impact will it have on the fishery this year?
3) What will be the impact 2 to 4 years out?
4) do you think packery channel has an impact + or - on these types of "things"? |

| I have noticed in few spots on the island (right by the Whataburger is one) people have aerators running to oxygenate the water. Maybe if the word got out more people would throw one out. It would just be tough to know when they are needed. A cheap one can't cost more than a green light and they are all over. Just a thought. I have found some really nice trout in hte canals and they like to congregate in the areas far back with little to no water movement when it's cold. I would be suprised if no trout were affected. |

For the most part, no. The concentrations have lowered drastically in the last couple of weeks, but the fact that we are still seeing the organism in higher concentrations than normal may allow another "bloom" if conditions become favorable again.
As for Drake's questions:
1. Don't know, honestly. Most folks thought lower temps would do it, but the little bugger has managed to stick it out through our lowest temps of the year. Sorry, not much of an answer, but that's all I got.
2. Hopefully the impact will be minimal. The beach seemed to suffer the most from the red tide events this year with CC bay coming in second and the finally the ULM. Unfortunately, it did enter the bays, but the kills in the laguna were no where near what they were on the beach.
3. Barring a major freeze, I think populations will be fine 2-4 years out. Unless people continue to catch and kill large trout on a regular basis. TPWD numbers for this spring's gill nets were down. While this was only a small part of a massive data set, it could be indicative of a trout population on the decline.
4. I believe Packery has both positive and negative effects. Yes, ride tide rode the channel into the bays, but so did the triggerfish, barracuda, filefish, green turtles, and other "nearshore" species caught in the bays this year. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |
