nb&twil, you misunderstood. I don't mean for customers, I mean for themselves. Maybe I misunderstood the original posts, but I have run into 4-5 guides at the baitshops pretty regularly and they have stellas. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

shimano sahara 4000 75 bucks have taken it to get cleaned one time. I rinse off with fresh water from the hose after every use have had it for 2 years works just fine. 44 inch red with 12 lb mono... and countless other reds no problems with gears rippin or anything...bought the new sahara model and loved it up until it got stolen... the only thing about shimano is that in 2 years its gonna look like a 10 year old reel...on the other hand 10 year old penns look like the ones from last year...also have a symetre 2500 I like it just as much but rather spend 75 on sahara than and 25 on lures than get the 100 dollar symetre _________________ DONT MESS WITH TEXAS AND YOU WILL CATCH MORE FISH!!! |

| Penn 720, 722, buy them on Ebay cause they dont make them anymore. Old fashion, but rugged and they work. Guy that taught me to fish here, hooked me up with them back in the 80's. Run between $40 AND $60. You can still get them new in the box. |

Shimano Symetre 2500
I have 4 of them and they are by far the best spinning reel on the market for the price. I've had 2 for 4 years and 2 for 2 years and with a little maintenance every now and then they'll last forever.
I got mine off EBay for around $65 with free shipping. |

Shimanos have the smoothest action and definatly the smoothest drags when new, but I still prefer the Penns because I have had (or did have until I was ripped off last weekend) two Penns SS 2000 series and 3000 series that were 10 and 8 years. Had never had them cleaned and did little to take care of them and they stil worked like new. My Shimanos actually cost a little more and had not lasted as long before the smooth gears began to howl a bit. Still, you can't really go wrong with either of them if you buy in the $70 to $125 dollar range you wil get a good value for your money. _________________ Big Ed

| I don't think you can go wrong with a Penn, Shimano, or Daiwa. I have a Daiwa Regal Z on a 7 1/2 foot Falcon coastal rod with braid. I've had it about 5 years and it's still very smooth for a $50 reel. It has an achilles heel in that the bail pickup bearing must be oiled daily if you're throwing lures. I'm using waterproof grease now to see how it holds up. I also use car wax to seal the exterior. |

Just called my local store and they said the only Stradics they have are the 2500's. I'd like to have more line than that when heading to the coast so I'll have to look into some other reels. Thanks for the advice so far guys. |
thats the perfect size. use 20# power pro and I promise you it will be fine. I can cast nearly 100 yards in a heavy wind and I always have plenty of line left to catch bull reds.. I used to only fish 4000 then I got brave and IM glad I did.. the 2500 its much better to fish with all day long.
I also have a stella too. its a 3000 series and its amazing but that reel nobody gets to touch I spent far too much money on it.. but honestly the stradic is not that much inferior just not as smooth and not as much drag.. |

| The 2500 with braid seems to be the best size for me also. |

I forget his name, but one of Tyler's fishing buds swore up-and-down that Okuma's Epixor EB-30 series was the best a couple years ago.
Instead of arguing of what reel is better than another's "no-fail favorite," or marginally due to whatever factor, just keep your low-budget reels cleaned after each use -- and wait for AR bearings to become the norm.
In the meantime, I'm gonna stick to my Zebco 202s!
Edit: reference goes to GoingCoastal, now that I recall. |

| I wound up getting a Penn Spinfisher 450SSG. I'll be testing it out in freshwater Thursday and then taking it out on the salt next Wednesday. Thanks for the advice guys. |
