What's up all. I need a saltwater spinning reel for my American Rodsmith 7 foot med-fast action rod that I take to the coast every month or so. Anyone have any suggestions? I had an Okuma Epixor junker that the salt just obliterated... I'm thinking of a Shimano or Diawa.

Ordinarily I bank/kayak fish in the coastal flats/bays, but I'd like to have a little extra line capacity for Packery attempts if need be.

Many opinions out there, but heres mine:

Penn, 440 sg or 450 if its a little heavier set-up. Best reel for the money (80-90 bucks), much cheaper then an equally reliable shimano/diawa (atleast 140 for one that will last as long as the Penn). Equal sized Shimanos also wont hold as much line, diawas will hold slightly more, but I don't think as much as the Penn (may be wrong there though, double check). Gear ratios are all very similar. In terms of smoothness though, you can't get any slicker than the shimanos, but I will take reliability and durability over a slick shiny reel. Penns also have a warranty and parts are usually not that hard to come by if needed, but I have never needed to replace a part on all 4 of my penn spinners.

Even better, if you can find an old pen 4400ss with the black handle, the discontinued one from when they were made in the USA, snatch it up. It will last years.

In my opinion the Penn SSM's are better than SSG's. Look into that. Go on E-Bay if you want to save money.

agreed hornytoad, do they come in the smaller spinning sizes like the 440? If they do I might have to get pair.

I'd also take a Shimano over anything else.10 of 14 guides at the dock I'm at use Shimano. If you can get Stradics at Academk for $99 I'd say buy em quick.

I think the smallest the ssm's come in is a 650. My son has the Penn Sargus. It has an all metal body, braid ready and the smallest is the 2000 series. It's pretty affordable. It does not have th ht-100 drag though. If you want to get reviews and specs. go to Bass Pro Shops.

Just called my local store and they said the only Stradics they have are the 2500's. I'd like to have more line than that when heading to the coast so I'll have to look into some other reels. Thanks for the advice so far guys.

most of the guides use the high end shimano models like stellas and such. which are fantastic. I have heard lots of mixed reviews about stadics and saharas, but then again, if you don't take care of any reel it will break on you. I don't know much about the sargus because its very new and there are no long term reviews of it.

Maybe the best money you can spend in fishing gear is that little 2 pack of penn reel grease and oil. Proper care of any reel will drastically increase its life.

Shimano Stradics and Saharas, only thing I buy now. Have some 430ss and 4300ss reels, they arent as nice, but they are dependable and EASY to repair yourself.

what guide do you know that fishes stellas? i don't know a single guide that uses any high end spinning reel for customers.
most guides use the lower end shimano reels so if/when they break, get dunked, lock up, they can afford to replace them.
as for mixed reviews on the stradic and sahara... that's too bad. all i have to go on is my own experience and the shimano sahara 3000 is my favorite reel (and i've owned a lot of them) for the money. the sahara is actually built with a lot of the same feeatures the old stellas were built with.
here's a personal testimony for shimano... i bought a sahara 3000 about a year ago. i have rinsed it (nothing more than a spray with freshwater if i happen to rinse my truck that day) maybe 4 times. other than that, i don't do any maintenance to it. i fish 20lb braid with a fairly heavy drag around rocks/pilings and it is still extremely smooth. i have fished with almost every reel available, and for the money, i have still not found a better reel for the price than shimano's sahara.

The 2500 series is pretty decent. I don't know how much line you really need past that. Personally I like the size of the 2500s. Its all good.

I have a 3000 Shimano Symetre that I love. Got it from Roy's about 100 bucks and I have no complaints; light and casts great with 20lb suffix braid.
