I like 20 pound mono on my 5500's. I started out with 30 but couldn't really cast very far. Haven't tried braid on them yet. I can huck that 20 pound right on out there.

those strap on ice cleats would work pretty good. When I was in Alaska we used to put hex head screws in the bottom of our boots for ice traction
